The Key Word — מְכוֹנָה, ha.me.kho.Notgenerated
The word מְכוֹנָה (*mkownah*) refers to a base or pedestal, providing a foundational support for various structures. This feminine noun is derived from the root מָכַן (*makhan*), which relates to stability and strength, essential qualities for the temple's design.
In this verse, the stands are integral to the overall structure, indicating that they are not merely decorative but serve a vital function in supporting the basins used for ritual washing and offerings.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb עָשָׂה, he made, governs the entire verse, with two noun phrases as objects: the stands and the basins. The structure indicates a straightforward description of what was made, emphasizing the action of creation.
The prepositional phrase עַל־, on, connects the basins to the stands, indicating their placement and relationship, which is crucial for understanding their function within the temple.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates מְכוֹנָה as μεξωνωθ, indicating a similar concept of a base or foundation. This choice aligns with the Hebrew meaning but may reflect a broader interpretation in the Greek context.
The use of ἐποίησεν for עָשָׂה also emphasizes the act of making, showing continuity in the understanding of craftsmanship from Hebrew to Greek.

This repetition of the verb is suspicious; and the parallel text shows the right reading to be and the bases ten (in number), and the lavers ten upon the bases. “Ten” in Hebrew writing closely resembles “he made.” The LXX. renders, “And the bases he made ten, and the lavers he made upon the bases;” which shows that the corruption of the text is ancient.

The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran
The Masoretic Text states, "וְאֶת־ הַמְּכֹנ֖וֹת עָשָׂ֑ה וְאֶת־ הַכִּיֹּר֥וֹת עָשָׂ֖ה עַל־ הַמְּכֹנֽוֹת׃" which translates to "the stands; the basins on the stands;" The Septuagint agrees with the Masoretic Text in terms of the words used, as all eight words match in the word-by-word correspondence. Therefore, there are no significant differences between these witnesses for this verse.
וְאֶת־ הַמְּכֹנ֖וֹת עָשָׂ֑ה וְאֶת־ הַכִּיֹּר֥וֹת עָשָׂ֖ה עַל־ הַמְּכֹנֽוֹת׃
8 of the 8 words are matched. This is the word-by-word correspondence, not the Septuagint's own sentence — its word order and its articles are its own.
Four traditions, not one. “On the leather” means the letters physically survive on the scroll, as against letters an editor has supplied to fill a hole in it — a restoration is a scholar’s reading, not a reading of the manuscript. The map of this verse — what each word keeps company with
This is a map of two things, both counted rather than judged. Company kept: which words stand within three words of each of these, anywhere in the Hebrew Bible — the thicker the line, the more often the pair meet compared with chance. Built from: the words a word is made out of, taken from its own Strong’s entry. It is not a map of meaning: nothing here claims two words mean the same thing.
