Matthew 28

The women come to Christs grave, 1 and by an Angel, who had rolled away the stone, they are informed of his resurrection,2 And go to tell the same to the Disciples, 7. Christ meets themly the way.9. The Guard bring the same tidings to the Chief Priest, but suffer themselves to be corrupted with money, saying, that he was stoln out of the grave,11. Christ manifests himself to his Disciples in Galilee,16. And gives them in charge to preach and baptise among all Nations, 19. and promiseth them his assistance, 20.

1. And late (after) the Sabbath, [Gr. late of the sabbaths; that is, as is expounded, Mark 16:1. when the Sabbath – day was past; for by the word Sabbath in the plural number, the Sabbath – day or Seventh day also understood, Matth 12.1. Acts 13 ver. 14] as it began to down towards the first (day) [Gr. one, that is, the first, as is declared, Mark 16:9.] of the week, [Gr. ofthe sabbaths, which word is also sometimes taken fro the whole week , Mark 16:9. John 20:1. 1 Cor.16.2.] (there) came Mary Magdalen, and the other Mary, [with which two there yet some others, named, Mark 16:1. Luke 24:10.] to view the grave [Having with them spices, Luke 24:1. to anoint the body of Christ, Mark 16:1]

2. And behold there happened a great Earth – quake: for an Angel of the Lord desceding out of Heaven, [Namely, in the shape of a young stone from the door, not able by his divine power to do this himself, but to shew the truth of his humane nature, even after his resurrection, as is to be seen also, John 11 verse 39 41] and sate upon the same.

3. Ad his shape [that is, face] was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.

4. And for fear of him the Guard were very much affrighted, [Gr. shaking, trembling]and became as dead (me)

5. But the Angel answering, said unto the women, Fear not ye: for i know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified.

6. He is not here, for he risen, according as he said [As is to be seen, Matth 26.32] Come hither, see the place where the Lord lay. [that s, the Lord dead body, which even after death remained united to the divine nature, as also the soul did in Heaven

7. And go hastily and tell hhis disciples, that he is risen from the dead: and behold he goeth before you towards Galilee, there shall ye see him; Behold i have told you.

8. And going forth hastily from the grave with fear and great joy, [The fear was out of human infirmity, because they saw the glory of the Angel: and the joy from the joyful message of Christ Resurrection] they ran to tell (the same) to his disciples.

9. And as they went to tell his disciples, Behold, Jesus met them, saying, Hail unto you: and they coming to (him) laid hold on his feet, and worshipped him, [That is, fell down at his feet, embracing the same in token of love and reverence, as may be seen, 2 Kings 4:27. Luke 7:38.]

10. Then said Jesus unto them, Fear not, go your way, tell my brethren, [so he calls his Disciples for their comfort, to shew thhat although they had forsaken him, yet notwithstanding his love to them caused not, nor was diminished. See John 20 17] that they go towards Galilee, and there they shall see me. [There Christ intended chicfly to manifest himself, because that there he had the most disciples, and there it was safest for them]

11. And as they were going, behold, some of the Guard came into the City, and told the chief Priests the things which had happened.[Namely, concerning teh resurrection of Christ.]

12. And they being assembled with the Elders, and having taken counsel together, they gave the souldiers much money, [Gr. money enough; or silverlings enough; i.e. silver pence]

13. And said, say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him while we slept.

14. And if this come to be heard by the Governour, we will pacufic him, [Or bear him in hand thus, perswade him, i.e. by reasoan make him believe it] and make you tyo be without care, (or, rid you of care)

15. And they having taken the money, did as they were taught. And this word [Namely, that the Disciples had taken away Christ body by night] is spread abroad among the Jews, untill this day.

16. And the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, [For the twelfth, namely, Judas, was saln off from them] towards the mountain, where Jesus had appointed them. [Gr. had command, or ordained them, namely, for to come to him there.]

17. And when they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. [See hereof moe at large, Luke 2:38,41]

18. And Jesus coming to them, spake unto them, saying, unto me all power is given in Heaven, and on earth. [That is, all authority, and faculty, or ability, as to the Head of the Church, together, govern, and defend the same throughout the whole world].

19. Go ye therefore, instruct all the Nations, [Or make disciples among all Nations, as this word is also taken, Act 14 verse 21. see also,Mark 16 verse 15] baptising the same, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the holy Ghost, [i.e. that say so by Gods command, they may be hallowed and consecrated as children of and in covenant with the true God, Father, Son, and holy Ghost, and consequently obliged to his service and obedience. See 1 Cor 1 verse 15] teaching them to observe all things i have commanded you.

20. And behold i am with you [Namely, with you my disciples, and all your successors in my Church: and that according to my Godhead, Majesty, Grace and Spirit. See Matth 26.11.] all the days unto the end of the world. Amen. [what this word signifies, see Matthew 6:13. 1 Cor 14.16. 2 Cor 1.20. and it is here added to the end of this Gospel, as also to most all the stability and assurance of that which is contained in the same. See John 21 verse 24
