1 Chronicles 2:1-17

Here is, 1. The names of the twelve sons of Israel, vers. 1, 2, 3. An account of the order of Judah, down to Jeffe, vers. 3—12. 3. The children of Jeffe, vers. 13—17. 4. The pottery of Hearon, not only through Ram, from whom David came, but Caleb, vers. 18—20. Segah, vers. 21—24. Jerahmed, vers. 9—13. and fe to vers. 41. and more in Caleb, vers. 42—49. with the family of Caleb the son of Hur, vers. 50—55.

1. THESE are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Siheon, Levi, and Judah, Isfachar, and Zebulun, 2. Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 3. The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah; which three were born unto him of the daughter of Shua the Canaanitefs. And Er the first-born of Judah was evil in the fight of the LORD, and he flew him. 4. And Tamar his daughter in law bare

him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five. 5. The sons of Pharez; Hezron and Hamul. 6. And the sons of Zerah; Zimri, and Etian, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara: five of them in all. 7. And the sons of Carmi; Azhar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed. 8. And the son of Ethan; Azariah. 9. The sons of Hezron that were born unto him; Jerahmed, and Ram, and Chelufah. 10. And Ram begat Amminadah; and Amminadah begat Nahthon, prize of the children of Judah; 11. And Nahthon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, 12. And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jeffe, 13. ¶ And Jeffe begat his first-born Eliah, and Abinaiah the second, and Shimma the third, 14. Nethaned the fourth, Radda the fifth, 15. Ozen the sixth, David the seventh: 16. Whoe filters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abifah, and Joab, and Afahel, three. 17. And Abigail bare Amaia: and the father of Amaia was Jeter the Ithomeelite.

1. On Shul, the Church.

We have here the illustrious family of Jacob, and of them, Judah, as most distinguished, both the convenience in his genealogy. Of him we have the largest account, not only because he was of the total tribe, but for the Messiah’s sake, who sprang from him. The names of many of his descendants, Er, Onan, Achan, and of Tamar, his usefulness daughter in law, are marked with infamy in scripture; yet to these was the friend of Simeon allied, and from her descended. Let the greatest criminals not despair.

The family of Jeffe is particularly taken notice of, for David’s sake, of whom as concerning the first Christ came. He is called the seventh son of Jeffe; through in Sen. xvi. 17. Jeffe had eight, and he the youngest. Either one of them died before he came to the crown, or one of the eight might be by another wife.

18. ¶ And Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azubah his wife, and of Jeriod: her sons are theirs; Jethar, and Shohab, and Ardou. 19. And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which the bare him Hur. 20. And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezalel. 21. ¶ And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was threefores years old, and the bare him Seguh. 22. And Seguh begat Jair, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gilead. 23. And he took Gethur, and Aram, with the towns of Jair, from them, with Kenath and the towns thereof, even threefores cities: all these belonged to the sons of Machir, the father of Gilead. 24. And after that Hezron was dead in Caleb-ephrath, then Abiah, Hezron’s wife, bare him; Asher the father of Tekoa. 25. ¶ And the sons of Jerahmed the first-born of Hezron were, Ram the first-born, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozen, and Ahijah. 26. Jerahmed had also another wife, whose name was Atarah, the son of the mother of Onam. 27. And the sons of Ram the first-born of Jerahmed were Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker. 28. And the sons of Onam were Shammai and Juda. And the sons of Shammai; Nadab, and Abithur. 29. And the name of the wife of Abithur was Abillah, and the bare him Ahban, and Mohil. 30. And the sons of Nadab; Sahel, and Appaim: but Sehel died without children. 31. And the sons of Appaim; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Shefsan. And the children of Shefsan; Ahlai. 32. And the sons of Juda the brother of Shammai; Jethar, and Jonathan: and Jethar died without children. 33. And the sons of Jonathan; Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmed. 34. ¶ Now Shefsan had no sons, but daughters; and Shefsan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Judah. 35. And Shefsan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant to wife, and the bare him Attai. 36. And Attai begat Nathan, and Nathan begat Zahid. 37. And Zahid begat Ephial, and Ephial begat Obed. 38. And Obed begat Jehu, and Jehu begat Azariah. 39. And Azariah begat Helez, and Helez begat Elealah. 40. And Elealah begat Sihamai, and Sihamai begat Shallumi. 41. And Shallumi begat Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begat Elishama. 42. ¶ Now the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmed, were Mefsan his first-born, which was the father of Ziph: and

the sons of Marcihah, the father of Hebron. 41. And the sons of Hebrich; Korah and Tappuah, and Rekem, and Shema. 44. And Shema begat Rahaun, the father of Jorkoam: and Rekem begat Shammai. 45. And the son of Shammai was Maon: and Maon was the father of Beth-zur. 46. And Ephah Caleb’s concubine bare Haran, and Moza, and Gazez: and Haran begat Gazez. 47. And the sons of Jahdai; Regem, and Jotham, and Gethan, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph. 48. Maachah Caleb’s concubine bare Sheber, and Tirhanah. 49. She bare allo Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gilma: and the daughter of Caleb was Achfa. 50. The wife were the sons of Caleb the son of Hur, the firth-born of Ephraath; Shobal the father of Kirjath-jararim. 51. Salma the father of Beth-lehem, Hareph the father of Beth-gader. 52. And Shobal the father of Kirjath-jararim had sons; Harach, and half of the Manahethites. 53. And the families of Kirjath-jararim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mithraites: of them came the Zareathites, and the Eithraithites. 54. The sons of Salma; Beth-lehem, and the Netophathites; Attaroth, the house of Joab, and half of the Manahethites, the Zorites. 55. And the families of the scribes which lived at Jabez; the Tiraithites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.

1 Chronicles 2:18-55

Caleb is the sons as Cheluhai, v. 9, and Jmoth seems another name of his wife Azubah. A numerous potterity descended from Hezron, who even in old age married, and left his wife with child. He is said to die in Caleb-Ephraath, supposed to be Beth-lehem, where he resided, it seems, whilst his brethren dwells in Gathes.—Two of the persons mentioned in this genealogy, died childless, v. 30, 32, and another had no son. God’s gifts are sovereign: let not those murmur from whom the blessing of children is with-held, but seek to secure a name in heaven, better than that of sons and daughters. He who had no sons, married his daughter, though an heiress, v. 34, to an Egyptian preselye his servant. Either it was his choice, from the excellent dispositions he had seen in him, and he is entitled her happiness rather than her greatness; or if the choice was her own, and he saw her affections placed on him, though her inferior, he was too indulgent to refuse his consent, where, except the mere want of worldly wealth, the person appeared deserving her regard. Note, A good parent in the disposal of his children, will consult the happiness of their lives, rather than mere money, or wretched nobility. Several of these genealogies end in the names of places, v. 19, 50, 51, where the descendants of such an one were afterwards fixed. Some of them were families of scribes, among whom especially learning flourished—an honourable distinction. The Kenites are here mentioned, v. 55, not as descended from Salma, but as dwelling among his potterity in the tribe of Judah, Tulp. 1. 10. Note, They who have the heart to join God’s militant Israel, shall share with them their portion in the land of glory.
