1 Chronicles 3:1-9

We have here a full account of, 1. David’s sons, ver. 1—9. 2. His successors in the throne as long as the kingdom continued, ver. 10—18. 3. The remains of his family in and after the captivity, ver. 17—24.

NOW these were the sons of David which were born unto him in Hebron; the firth-born Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelites: the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelites: 2. The third, Abialom the son of Maachah, the daughter of Talmai king of Gethur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith: 3. The fifth, Shephariah of Abitah: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife. These six were born unto him in Hebron, and there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years. 5. And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathhua the daughter of Ammis: 6. Itham also, and Elifhama, and Elijhelet. 7. And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 8. And Elifhama, and Eliada, and Elihelet, nine. 9. These were all the sons of David, beside the sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister.

David’s illustrious family consists of sixteen sons and one daughter; four of them by Bathhua, or Bathheba; one of which, Solomon, was his successor, and Nathan another, from whom St. Luke traces our Lord’s pedigree, chap. iii. The sons of his concubines are not reckoned.

10. And Solomon’s son was Rehoboam, Abia his son, Afa his son, Jehoftaphat his son, 11. Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joath his son, 12. Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jorham his son, 13. Ahaziah his son, Hezekiah his son, Manaffeh his son, 14. Amon his son, Jofiah his son. 15. And the sons of Jofiah were, the firth-born Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. 16. And the sons of Jehoiakim; Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son. 17. And the sons of Jeconiah, Affir, Salshbat his son, 18. Malchiram also, and Pedziah, and Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hofhama, and Nedabiah. 19. And the sons of Pedziah were, Zerubbabel, and Shimei: and the sons of Zerubbabel, Michullam, and Hananiah, and Shelo, with their sister: 20. And Hafsubah, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hafsiah, Jofiah-heled, five. 21. And the sons of Hananah; Pelmaah, and Jofiah: the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Amon, the sons of Obaliah, the sons of Shechaniah. 22. And the sons of Shechaniah; Shenziah: and the sons of Shemaiah; Hatruah, and Igeal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shaphat, six. 23. And the sons of Neariah; Elocenai, and Hezekiah, and Azrikam, three. 24. And the sons of Elocenai were Hodaiah, and Eliafhah, and Pelaiah, and Akkub, and Johanan, and Dalaiah, and Anani, seven.

1 Chronicles 3:10-24

For seventeen descents the crown of Judah went from father to son, in a direct line. Just before the captivity, the lineal descent was interrupted. Jeconiah, Affir the captive, v. 17. (not a descendant of his, but Jeconiah himself) though he was written childless, respecting the succession to the throne, yet seems to have several children in Babylon, v. 17, 18. Zerubbabel, here said to be the son of Pedziah, is elsewhere called the son Salathis: either his grandson, if Pedziah was Salathis’s son, or if his brother, as it seems more probable, Pedziah, as next of kin, might, on his dying childless, marry his widow, and raise up and to his brother, which seems the best solution of the difficulty. There is no discernable difference between the descendants of Zerubbabel here, and in St. Matthew, which may be accounted for by the same person frequently having more names than one.
