Revelation 19

Revelation 19:1-4

In this chapter we have, 1. A farther account of the triumphant song of angels and saints: for the Lord of Babylon, viz. Gal. 2. The marriage between Christ and the church proclaimed and perfected, viz. 5—10. 3. Another war-like expedition of the glorious head and husband of the church, with the benefit of it, viz. 101 Cts.

1. AND after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia, Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power unto the Lord our God: 2. For true and righteous are his judgments; for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. 3. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke arose up for ever and ever. 4. And the four and twenty elders, and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

A command being given in v. 20. of the former chapter, to the saints of God, to rejoice over Babylon sailors, we have here their song of praise on that occasion. They cried, Allalua, ascribing salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, to the Lord their God; acknowledging his righteous judgments in the vengeance executed on the great whore, for her lewdness, idolatry, and cruelty; and they repeated loud Alleluia, which the justice of her torment arose up for ever and ever. The four being creatures, and the elders, the representatives of the ministers and the church of the redeemed, hereupon joined in their adorations before the throne, and joyfully cried, Amen! Alleluia! Note, Even the torment of the damned will afford matter of praise to God’s saints, and glory to himself.

5. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. 6. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth, 7. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8. And to her was granted, that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. 9. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-lupper of the Lamb: And he saith unto me, Thefe are the true sayings of God. 10. And I fell at his feet to worship him: And he said unto me, See alas do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation 19:5-10

The song of triumph over Babylon being ended, a voice from the throne rejoices the hell of the redeemed to unite in the praises of their common Lord; and instantly unanswerable voices, loud as cataracts of water, or mighty thunderings, poured forth their Halleluia: For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth; since the antichristian powers are broken, his kingdom of grace is extended through the earth, and his dominion universal over a willing people. The marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready; therefore let us be glad, and rejoice, and give honour to him. And this many refer to the conversion of the Jews, who will now be brought into the church, and be publicly in profession joined to the Lord in his people.

1. The dress of the Lamb’s wife is described. She is arrayed in fine linen, clean and white; and that is interpreted to signify the righteousness of saints, both imputed and implanted, whereby the church becomes meet for the bosom of her Lord, beautiful in the comeliness he puts upon her.

2. They are declared blessed, who are invited, and come to the marriage-lupper of the Lamb; partaking of all the privileges and ordinances of the gospel, thereby admitted to the happieth communion with Jesus, and joined to the Lord in one Spirit.

3. The angel closes with a solemn assurance of the truth of this revelation, which should not fail of its accomplishment; and, overcome with the heightened of his glory, John fell as his feet, and was ready to pay him divine honour; not considering what he did: but the angel rebuked him for his inconsiderate design. He owns himself unworthy of that honour, which was due to God alone; and, glorious as he appeared, was but the apostles’ fellow-servant, bearing testimony to the same Jesus, and now revealing what the Saviour dictated to him, who mislaid the prophets, and sent him to deliver this message

to John for the church’s use and comfort. Now: The highest created being hath no more title to our worship than the lowest; it is the same idolatry to worship an angel as a worm.

1. 11. And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
2. 11. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself.
3. 11. And he was clothed with a vellure dipt in blood: and his name is called, The Word of God.

4. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

5. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the wine-prets of the fierceness and wrath of almighty God.

6. And he hath on his vellure and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

7. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, laying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather your selves together unto the happy of the great God.

8. That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

9. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, laying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather your selves together unto the happy of the great God.

10. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which he doth do not go to the mouth, and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

12. The Lord Jesus here appears in Majesty to execute vengeance on the beall and his adherents, now assembled to make their laft efforts.

13. A most magnificent description is given of the Captain of our salvation. He is seated on a white horse, the emblem of victory; he is called faithful and true, performing all his promise to his people, and in righteousness executing vengeance on his enemies. His eyes, bright as the flame, pierce into the fences of the soul; and his many crowns of gold denote his universal dominion; his name and nature, as Jehovah, none can comprehend; his bloody vellure bespands his conquest over his slaughtered foes; and one of the names, whereby he hath revealed himself, is, The Word of God. Close behind him followed his faithful warriors, his saints arrayed in robes of righteousness and garments of salvation; from his mouth proceeds the sharp sword of his denunciations of vengeance, before which his foes must fall: as a poster’s vessel before an iron rod, so shall they be broken to pieces; and as grapes laid in the wine-prets, so shall he trample them in his fury; and on his vellure, where it hung down over his thigh, was this illustrious motto wrought, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

14. A call is given to all the fowls of the air, to assemble on this dread occasion, and feath on the corpses of all the antichristian hoff, both great and small, who are now about to perish together.

15. The army of the ungodly, Papist, Pagan, and Mahometan, assembles under the conduct of the beall; the battle is joined, the victory decisive; the beall and false prophet, which wrought the lying wonders, are taken; and the ringleaders in the antichristian apostasy are cast together, body and soul, into the burning lake; and all their adherents fall by the sword of him that sat on the white horse, and the fowls are gorged with their carcasses. And now, all foes being subdued, the glorious millennium commences, when the kingdoms of the world become the kingdoms of the Lord and of his Christ.
