Revelation 20:7-10

This chapter is thought, by some, to be the darthest part of all this prophecy; it is very probable the things mentioned in it are not accomplished; and therefore it is the major way to content ourselves with general observations, than to be persons and particulars in our applications of it. I. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself.

It is, And he was clothed with a vellure dipt in blood: and his name is called, The Word of God.

14. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the wine-prets of the fierceness and wrath of almighty God.

15. And he hath on his vellure and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. 17. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, laying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather your selves together unto the happy of the great God.

16. And I saw the beall, and the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20. And he laid hold on the dragon that old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. 3. And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and let a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled; and after that he must be looted for a little season. 4. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beall, neither his image, neither had received his mask upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

17. Bleifed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God, and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years, in body, soul, and spirit devoted to him, and experiencing the felicity of his service here, as the pledge of that eternal glory and bleifedness which they expect hereafter.

18. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be looted out of his prison, 8. And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the land of the sea.

19. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compelled the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city; and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

20. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beall and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The fifth period begins with the looting of Satan, the thousand years being expired. His going forth once more to deceive; his prevalence over the nations, whom once more he will assemble, even Gog and Magog, the figures of those enemies of the church so named of old, and they shall surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city; but fire from heaven shall consume them, and the devil that deceived them will now be finally shut up in the eternal prison of hell, with the beall and the false prophet, to be tormented for ever and ever. To what event this refers; who are the nations meant by Gog and Magog; or what time this period occupies, is utterly mysterious, and where we must be content to be ignorant. The events themselves alone can unfold the prophecy.

11. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them.

12. And I saw the dead, both small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was

47. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beall and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

49. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beall and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

50. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beall and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

51. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beall and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

opened, which is the head of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which mean wrote in the books, according to their works. 13. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. 14. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire: This is the second death. 15. And whichever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

9. 11—15. The flesh period seems evidently to refer to the dead judgment, which is here a vitally described.

10. The Judge appears on his magnificent throne, and before him the elementary heaven vanish, and the earth flies away.

11. All, both small and great, appear at his tremendous bar; the sea and the grave give up their dead; the books are opened of God’s omniscience, where every work and secret thought of men are recorded, and they are judged accordingly; whilst in the book of life of the Lamb their names are found written who shall never enter into condemnation. Now, before this awful day arrives, we should judge ourselves that we may not be judged of the Lord, and so continually live under the apprehension and influence of it, that we may then have nothing to fear.

12. The issue of the great affair is, that death and hell, the grave, for ever were abolished; and the wicked who exalted in their separate state, now railed to life, even all who are not found written in the book of life, are cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death, unexpectedly more dreadful than the first, for here immortality itself will be a curse, and the torments be intractable and eternal. Lord, gather not my soul with sinners in that day!
