Ezekiel 44

3 [It is] for the prince. This is most naturally understood of the “David” foretold, xxxiv. 24, i.e., the Messiah. An additional proof that all these details are symbolical. The Rabbis interpret the passage of the Messiah.

VERS. 4-31. In this section the officers of God’s house are appointed, and are enjoined to sanctify themselves for His service; and not only to put away from among them all foreigners and strangers, but to degrade those of their own body who had profaned themselves. The ceremonies which are here prescribed are for the most part found in the Levitical institutions; only they are much more strict; the things formerly required of the high priest being here extended to all the priests. These minute specifications, like those of the Mosaic laws, show the standard of character and conduct which God expects on the part of all His people, since He has granted to them the privilege to approach Him as a “holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” (1 Pet. ii. 5).

4 the north gate. This part of the Temple had been desecrated by the “image of jealousy,” viii. 3.

6 let it suffice you. That is, Let these things cease. Cp. 1 Pet. iv. 3.

11 ministering to the house. They shall be employed in the menial offices of the sanctuary.

15 the sons of Zadok. Zadok had succeeded to the high priesthood when the line of Ithamar forfeited that honour, see 1 Sam. ii. 35; 1 Kings i. 7; ii. 26, 27, and notes.
