Mark 12:1-3

TITLE: Jesus the Rock
TEXT: Mark 12:1-13: Christ is the Rock of our salvation.
Which? KEY WORD: Types READING: Mark 12:10-13:1. Jesus teaches a parable that the hearers understood - too well.
  1. The application of this parable is also clear.
  2. Jesus is the rock being rejected by the Jews. Jesus is the Rock: Wilderness Rock - 1 Corinthians 10:4 - Water of Life from the rock in the wilderness

Rejected Rock - Acts 4:11-12 - Rejected by builders, salvation in no other name

Offensive Rock - Romans 9:33 - Rock of offence, stumbling stone (also 1 Peter 2:8)

Solid Rock - Matthew 7:24 - Wise man build house on rock, not on sand

Church Rock - Matthew 16:18 - I will build my church

Living Rock - 1 Peter 2:4 - chosen of God, precious

Chief Corner Rock - 1 Peter 2:6 - main stone which holds an arch together

Precious Rock - 1 Peter 2:7 - jewel, valuable, beautiful

Mark 12:12-14

TITLE: Teaching the Truth
TEXT: Mark 12:12-14: All the people knew that Jesus was teaching the truth.
How? KEY WORD: Successes READING: Same :
  1. These people were trying to “ butter up” Jesus for their question.
  2. They recognized Jesus as one who spoke the truth.
  3. How can we have more success in our teaching efforts? One Doctrine1. Paul taught the same in every church (1 Corinthians 16:1; 1 Corinthians 4:17)
  4. Jude 1:3 - the faith (system of belief) once (and for all time) delivered to the saints
  5. Ephesians 4:5 - There is one faith Two Encouragements1. We make mistakes - try to walk in the example of Jesus.
  6. Our teaching will not return void (Isaiah 55:11) Three Admonitions1. You are teaching God’s creatures
  7. You are teaching for God
  8. There are people who want to be taught Four Instructions1. Show others the benefits of studying the Bible
  9. Deeper faith in God
  10. Understanding how to live here
  11. Hope for eternity
  12. Develop relationships with people and help them learn to love you
  13. Get the people’s attention - practical applications to life
  14. Care about what you teach people - zeal, excitement, passion - Jeremiah 20:9 - fire in my bones Five Lessons1. The moral character of the teacher is extremely important.
  15. Goodness is one of the most visible characteristics in a teacher’s life.
  16. Caution people about the evilness of sin.
  17. God is looking for a different kind of heart. (Psalms 51:17 - broken and contrite)
  18. When a person realizes the blessings they have in Christ, they can’t be quiet.

Mark 12:13-17

TITLE: Whose Image is on it?
TEXT: Mark 12:13-17: We must understand the important words of this text.
Which? KEY WORD: Words READING: Same :
  1. This chapter is a series of confrontations.
  2. People are trying to trick, entrap, and ensnare Jesus.
  3. They begin with “ soft soap” to build him up. (v. 14) Herodians - 131. Not a religious group - but a political party loyal to Herod (and thus loyal to Rome)
  4. Most Jews resented the Roman rule and sought independence from Rome
  5. Their question was intended to create strife between Herodians and Zealots Lawful - 141. Did you ever play “ Mother, may I?” game?
  6. Lawful includes:
  7. Jewish law
  8. Will of God
  9. Moral sense of right and wrong
  10. Today - government waste, used to support wrong (abortions), etc.
  11. Should we pay taxes? OR Do I HAVE to pay taxes? Hypocrisy - 151. Jesus saw through their plans - butter up and stick the knife in
  12. Hypocrite = acting a part, pretending to be someone you are not
  13. Most common - pretends to be righteous, but lives sinful life
  14. Here - pretending to seek information - really seeking to trap him Image - 161. Images are not wrong - photos, statues, art
  15. An image as an object of worship is wrong. (Exodus 20:4)
  16. Do not worship created things - worship the creator of all things.
  17. We bear the image of the heavenly (1 Corinthians 15:49)
  18. We are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27)
  19. Jesus the “ express image” of the Father. (Hebrews 1:3)
  20. We should be like Jesus. Render - 171. Dictionary - to return, to pay back
  21. To surrender, yield, give up
  22. Romans 13:7 - Render to all their dues - tax, tribute, fear, honor

Mark 12:18-27

TITLE: You do err
TEXT: Mark 12:18-27: We often make the same mistakes the Sadducees made.
What? KEY WORD: Mistakes READING: Same :1. The Pharisees and Herodians failed to trick Jesus.
  1. Now the Sadducees try their hand at it.
  2. Question involved the law of Levirate Marriage Assumed1. The question assumes that marriage continues in heaven.
  3. Many religious questions - make an assumption
  4. I was asked about instrumental music in worship
  5. Then, how do you justify tithing? (Assumed we tithed 10%)
  6. Many assume the pictures in Bible storybooks are accurate.
  7. John the Baptizer with a bowl of water over Jesus head
  8. Jesus with long hair (think he was a Nazarite)
  9. 3 wise men at the manger the night of Jesus birth
  10. Bible is Bible (not rightly divide OT and NT)
  11. 2 Timothy 2:15 - rightly dividing the Word of Truth
  12. David played the harp; worship on Saturday
  13. Keep the 10 Commandments Not Know Scriptures1. Have you not read Exodus 3:6 - God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
  14. God is not the god of the dead, but of the living.
  15. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are alive and serving God. Not Understand the Power (ability) of God1. In eternity we will be like the angels
  16. We will not marry, nor are we given in marriage.
  17. Heaven is not a place for weddings, family units, raising children
  18. In heaven, we will be the family of God.
  19. Today many forget about the ability of God.
  20. Cremation
  21. Person lost at sea, body never recovered
  22. Help us out of our problems Conclusion:1. You do greatly err.(27)
  23. Do not repeat these mistakes in seeking the truth.

Mark 12:28-24

TITLE: You’ve got to have heart
TEXT: Mark 12:28-34: We must love God will all our heart.
Which? KEY WORD: Feelings READING: Same :1. This man seems more genuine - not trying to trick Jesus.
  1. What is the FIRST (highest, most important) commandment?
  2. What is the heart mentioned in this verse? Love God with your:1. Heart - as distinguished from the other 3
  3. Soul = (psyche in Greek) - real person inside, personality, “ heart of hearts”
  4. Mind = understanding, dreams, goals, hopes, imagination
  5. Strength = power, might, ability, internal strength Biblical Heart1. Inner being = soul - depth of your inner most thoughts and feelings
  6. Will = decide, strength - 2 Corinthians 9:7 As he purposes in his heart, let him give
  7. Intellect = mind - Proverbs 23:7 As a man thinks in his heart, so is he
  8. Emotion = heart - text Love God with your heart Emotions of the Heart1. Anguish - 2 Corinthians 2:4 Anguish of heart
  9. Love - text - Love God with your heart
  10. Fear - Deuteronomy 5:29 - That there were such a heart in them to fear Me
  11. Happy, Joy - John 16:22 - I will see you again, your heart will rejoice
  12. Sorrow - John 16:6 - Sorrow has filled your heart
  13. Calm peace - Philippians 4:7 - Peace of God will guard your hearts Who is not far from the Kingdom?1. Those who study, seek, search
  14. Those who believe
  15. Those who repent
  16. Those who confess
  17. Those who have wandered away
  18. Good, honest, moral, religious - like Cornelius (Acts 10:1-48) Conclusion:
  19. If you will love God with your:

  21. Soul - inner being
  22. Mind - thoughts, understanding
  23. Strength - will, determination
  24. You will not be far from the kingdom of God

Mark 12:35-40

TITLE: Jesus, Son of Seven
TEXT: Mark 12:35-40: Jesus is both the descendent and Lord of David.
How? KEY WORD: Connections READING: Same :1. The other day I got a call from a man asking if Jesus is the Son of God. I said, “ Yes.” He asked, “ Then why does Jesus refer to himself as the Son of Man?”
  1. Answer: Jesus is BOTH. Psalms 110:1 - Study this passage and implications1. “ Jehovah said to my (David’s) Lord, Sit on my right hand”
  2. Three people here - Jehovah, David, and Lord
  3. Is Jesus under David or over him?
  4. Is Jesus the son of David or the Lord over David? Common people heard him gladly - 371. Not many high, mighty, rich are called.
  5. Jesus appealed not to intellectual, powerful, rich, political forces
  6. Jesus appealed to the common, ordinary man on the street Beware of the scribes1. Walk about in robes
  7. Love greetings in the marketplace
  8. Chief seat in synagogue
  9. Upper most place at a feast
  10. Devour widow’s houses
  11. Make a pretense of long prayers
  12. Receive greater condemnation Jesus, Son of Seven1. Son of Adam - all men (Luke 3:38)
  13. Son of Abraham - Hebrew, Jew (Matthew 1:1)
  14. Son of David - Tribe of Judah, King (Matthew 1:1)
  15. Son of Joseph (supposed) - human, legal heir (Luke 3:23)
  16. Son of Mary - virgin birth (Mark 6:3 Is this not the son of Mary?)
  17. Son of man - obey the Father (John 3:14 Son of Man must be lifted up)
  18. Son of God - deity (Matthew 16:16 Peter’s confession)
