Rest in Christ speaks to the spiritual peace and relief believers find when they entrust their burdens to Him, leaving behind worldly anxieties and mental unrest. This rest is often illustrated by images of a compass finding its true north or a weary traveler finally reaching a peaceful haven, reflecting the promise of tranquility in Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30).
Worldly anxieties rob a person of rest, causing constant mental unrest.
As a clock can never stand still from running, so long as the weights and plummets do hang thereat; even so a worldly man, having infinite cares, cogitations, and anxieties hanging on his mind, can never have rest or quiet, day or night, but is enforced to be working his brains when other men sleep, to compass those trifles wherein he is encumbered. The heart finds rest only when it comes to Christ, like a compass to the north.
The needle in the compass never stands still till it comes right against the north pole. The wise men of the East never stood still till they were right against the star which appeared unto them; and the star itself never stood still till it came right against that other Star, which shone more brightly in the manger than the sun did in the firmament. So the heart of man can find no rest till it comes to Christ.
