In 1911, as William Pierson Merrill [1867-1954] traveled on a steamer boat in Lake Michigan, bound for Chicago, he read an article on “The Church of Strong Men.” He was so moved by the article’s message that he penned the words to this powerful hymn, calling men of God to rise up to action.
