37.49 · Control, Rule · Rule, Govern
to rule, to govern to rule over people Though it would be possible to understand κρίνω in LUK 22:30 as meaning ‘to judge’ (see 56.30), the function of the twelve disciples seems to be far greater than that. Furthermore, there seems to be a significant Semitic influence in the meaning of κρίνω, since the corresponding Hebrew term likewise involved far more than merely making judicial decisions.
1 It is possible that ἐπικρίνω differs from κρίνω[a] in focusing greater attention upon what is decided. 2 The meanings of κρίνω[c] (30.108), ἀνακρίνω[d] and διακρίνω[a] (30.109) are all closely related to the process of learning and of understanding, and in some contexts the meanings shade one into the other. 3 κρίνω[e], κρίσις[a], and κρίμα[a] often appear in contexts referring to the judgment of God, particularly in reference to the so-called end times, but the limited differences in semantic components of meaning in contexts referring to God’s judgment do not warrant setting up a separate set of meanings. 4 One might argue that the meaning of κρίνω, κρίσις, and κρίμα in the cited contexts is only to make a judgment and that the negative or adverse character of the judgment depends entirely on the context. However, the frequency of the occurrence of κρίνωκρίσις, and κρίμα in the specific sense of adverse judgment or verdict of guilt is such as to justify setting up two different meanings, one involving simply the process of rendering a legal judgment (56.20) and the other, the process of legal condemnation (56.30).
