Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

λοιπός. For λουπός with a subst. cf. P Oxy II. 24218 (A.D. 77) τὰ λυπὰ (λ λοιπὰ) μέρη περιτειχίζειν, 2b. 2709 (A.D. 94) ταῖς λοιπαῖς ἀρούραις. It is used absolutely in P Ryl II. 2201 (A.D. 38) τοῦ λοιπ(οῦ) τῆς τιμῆ(ς) τοῦ χόρτου, ‘the rest of the price for the hay,” P Giss I. 78% (ii/a.p.) καλῶς δὲ ποιήσεις Kal περὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ἐνεργήσασα. For τοῖς λοιποῖς πᾶσι ἴῃ Phil 11%, ‘‘apparently a vague phrase = everywhere else,” Kennedy (2G7 ad 7.) compares C/G I. 1770 ἐπεὶ καὶ ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς πᾶσιν φανερὰν πεποήκαμεν THY τε ἰδίαν Kal τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Ρωμαίων προαίρεσιν. The neut. sing. is frequently used adverbially, sometimes with the idea of time “henceforth” (2 Tim 48), as in P Oxy I. 1198 (ii/iii A.D.) (= Selections, p. 103) Av δὲ ἔλθῃς εἰς ᾿Αλεξανδρίαν, od μὴ λάβω χεῖραν παρά [c]ov, οὔτε πάλι χαίρω σε λυπόν (1 λοιπόν), ‘Sand if you do go to Alexandria, I won’t take your hand, or greet you again henceforth,’’ and sometimes simply to mark transition to a new subject like an emphatic οὖν (1 Thess 4!: cf. Milligan ad /.), as a few lines further down in the same letter, 1° λυπὸν πέμψον etfs] με, παρακαλῶ σε, ‘‘send for me then, I beseech you”: cf. BGU III. 84619 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 94) λοιπὸν οἶδα τί [ποτ᾿] αἰμαυτῷ παρέσχημαι, ‘furthermore I know what I have brought πε[ποίῃ]κα, καθὼς ἠθέλησας, τοῦ ἢ (ἔτους)" [σ]ὺ οὖν βάσταξε λυπὸν (1. βάσταξαι λοιπὸν) ὃ ἂν ἔτιο[ν ἢ] (1. αἴτιον 7) τῆς κρίσεως. For λοιπὸν οὖν, “finally then,” cf. BGU IV. 10785 (A.D. 39) λοιπὸν οὖν, ἐὰν λάβω τὰ κερμάμια (1. κεράμια or κερμάτια), ὄψομαι, τί με δεῖ ποιεῖν, 2. τογοῦ (A.D. 41) (= Selections, p. 39) λοιπὸν οὖν ἔλαβον παρὰ το(ῦ) "Αραβος τὴν ἐπιστολὴν καὶ ἀνέγνων καὶ ἐλυπήθην. The transition to λοιπό(ν), τὸ λοιπό(ν), ‘‘ therefore,” ““ so,” the regular meaning in MGr, may be illustrated by such passages from late Greek as Polyb. i. 15. 11 λοιπὸν ἀνάγκη συγχωρεῖν, τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ὑποθέσεις εἶναι ψευδεῖς, Epict. 1. 22.15, 24. 1, ii. 5. 16, αἴ. : cf. Schmid Aéficzsyzzs ili. p. 135, and Jannaris Exp V. viii. p. 429f. For εἰς τὸ λοιπόν cf. P Petr III. 42 G(9)° (mid. iii/B.c.), for τοῦ λοιποῦ (sc. χρόνου), ‘ henceforth,” as in Gal 617, cf. P Hal 1. 147) (mid. iii/B.c.) σύνταξον οὖν, ὅπω[ς] Tod [λ]οιποῦ μὴ γίνηται τοῦτο, P Oxy X. 1203} (A.D. 117-38) ὥστε τοῦ λοιποῦ γράφεται (1 -ετε), τῶν γὰρ πρώτων τεσσάρων ἡμίσους ἐπιστολὴν οὐκ ἔσχον, ‘so in future write, for Ε have had no letter about the first four and a half metretae” (Edd.), and for ὧδε λοιπόν, as in 1 Cor 4°, cf. Epict. 11: 12. 24. The subst. λοιπάς, ‘‘ remainder,” ‘‘arrear,’’ which is described by LS as ‘‘ Eccl., Byz.,” is found in P Gen I. 578 (iv/A.D.) @v[e]kev τῆς λοιπάδος πυροῦ : cf. P Amh II. 1523 (v/vi A.p.), P Oxy I. 13618 (A.D. 583), and for the verb λοιπάζω see P Oxy IX. 11948 (c. A.D. 265) τὰ λοιπαζόμενα, “the arrears.” αΔοίπημα (not in LS) occurs in P Tebt II. 28174 (B.c. 125) ἄνευ παντὸς λοιπήματος, ‘without any arrears.” On λοιπογραφέω, ‘‘ allow to remain in arrears,” see P Petr III. §3(/)* (iii/B.c.) avelerar λοιπογραφεῖσθαι, “he is permitted to remain in arrears’’ (Edd.), and P Hamb , the editor’s note. “Λουκᾶς is generally treated as an abbreviated pet name from «Λουκανός (cf. Lightfoot on Col 4158, Zahn Znérod. iii. p. 5),
