God's Anointed

1 sermons

In the Bible, the term "God's Anointed" primarily refers to individuals who have been specifically chosen and consecrated by God for a particular purpose or mission. The Hebrew word for "anointed" is "mashach," from which the term "Messiah" (or "Christ" in Greek, "Christos") is derived. This term signifies not just physical anointing with oil but also a divine selection and empowerment for leadership or service, often seen in kings, prophets, and priests. For instance, in 1 Samuel 16, David is anointed by Samuel to be king over Israel, marking him as God's chosen leader (1 Samuel 16:13). The anointing symbolizes God's favor and presence in the life of the anointed individual. Moreover, the concept of "God's Anointed" takes on a messianic significance in the New Testament, where Jesus Christ is identified as the ultimate Anointed One (Messiah) who fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus quotes from Isaiah, declaring His mission as the Anointed One sent to bring good news, heal the brokenhearted, and proclaim freedom. Thus, in both the Old and New Testaments, the term "God's Anointed" encapsulates the idea of divine selection, empowerment, and the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan through chosen individuals, culminating in the person of Jesus Christ.
