15 Bible Verses on Being a Good Leader

15 verses

Effective leadership is characterized by integrity, wisdom, and a strong moral compass, as seen in the qualities outlined for overseers in Titus 1:7-14. A good leader acknowledges that their plans are subject to God's sovereignty, as Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, and seeks to honor Him in all decisions. The apostle Paul exhorts leaders to set a good example, as in 1 Timothy 4:12, and to possess qualities such as self-control and hospitality, as listed in 1 Timothy 3:2. Ultimately, leaders are to be respected and followed as they model faithfulness, as commended in Hebrews 13:7, demonstrating a commitment to serving and guiding others with humility and wisdom.

As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money. Instead, he must be hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it. For many are rebellious and full of empty talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not. As one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sternly, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.

You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you. Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
