Genesis 5

1 This is the book [scroll, written document] of the generations [family history, descendants] of Adam [the first man, humanity]. In the day [a literal 24-hour period, a figurative space of time] that God [Elohim, the supreme Creator] created [brought into existence, formed] man [humanity, the first human], He made him in His own likeness [image, resemblance to God]. word study 2 Male [the stronger sex, man] and female [woman, the weaker vessel] He created [brought into being, formed] them, and He blessed [bestowed divine favor upon] them. And in the day [a period of time, an era] they were created [formed, made], He called [summoned, named] them [Adam, mankind] “man [human, a living being].” word study 3 When Adam [the first man, created by God] was 130 years old, he had a son [begat, became the father of] in his own likeness [resemblance, similar nature], after his own image [divine likeness, reflection of God]; and he named [called, gave the name] him Seth [appointed, anointed one]. word study 4 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father of Seth [the appointed one], Adam [the first man, human] lived 800 years [a long period of time, eight centuries] and had [begat, fathered] other sons [male descendants, children] and daughters [female offspring, children]. word study 5 So Adam [the first man, humanity’s father] lived [experienced life, had existence] a total of 930 years [nine hundred and thirty, a long and full life], and then he died [passed away, came to his end, ceased to live]. word study 6 When Seth [the appointed one, third son of Adam] was 105 [a hundred and five] years old, he became [lived to be, was the father of] the father of Enosh [mortal man, son of Seth]. word study 7 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father [begat, gave birth to] of Enosh [a man who lived before the Flood], Seth [the third son of Adam and Eve] lived [had life, was quickened] 807 years [eight hundred and seven years, a long period of time] and had [begat, fathered] other [additional, more] sons [male descendants, children] and daughters [female children, girls]. word study 8 So Seth [the appointed one, third son of Adam] lived a total of 912 [nine hundred and twelve] years [periods of time, seasons of life], and then he died [passed away, came to his end, breathed his last]. word study 9 When Enosh [a man of humanity, son of Seth] was 90 [ninety, a large quantity of years] years old, he became [lived to beget, had as a son] the father of Kenan [Cainan, an antediluvian, son of Enosh]. word study 10 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father of Kenan [Cainan, his son], Enosh [a man of humanity, son of Seth] lived [experienced life, had existence] 815 years [a period of eight hundred and fifteen years] and had [begat, fathered] other [additional, more] sons [male descendants, children] and daughters [female descendants, children]. word study 11 So Enosh [a man, son of Seth] lived a total of 905 [nine hundred and five, a long lifetime] years, and then he died [came to his end, passed away]. word study 12 When Kenan [Cainan, an antediluvian] was 70 [seventy years old, a span of life] years old, he became [lived to be the father of, begat] the father of Mahalalel [praise of God, Mahalaleel]. word study 13 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father [to beget, generate] of Mahalalel [praise of God], Kenan [son of Enosh] lived [to have life, exist] 840 [eight hundred and forty, a significant period] years [a period of time, a cycle] and had [to beget, bring forth] other [additional, more] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, offspring]. word study 14 So Kenan the father of Jared [descendant, one who comes down]. word study 16 And after he had become the father [begat, gave birth to] of Jared [descent, going down], Mahalalel [praise of God] lived [had life, was quickened] 830 years [a long period of time, eight hundred and thirty years] and had [begat, gave birth to] other [additional, more] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, women]. word study 17 So Mahalalel [a man of praise, grandson of Cainan] lived a total of 895 [eight hundred ninety-five, eight hundred and ninety-five] years, and then he [came to his end, died a natural death] died. word study 18 When Jared [a descendant, living a long life] was 162 years old [one hundred sixty-two, a hundred and sixty-two], he became [begat, gave birth to] the father of Enoch [Hanoch, dedicated, a righteous man]. word study 19 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father [begat, generated] of Enoch [dedicated, Hanoch], Jared [descent, going down] lived [experienced life, was revived] 800 [eight hundred, a complete cycle] years and had [begat, fathered] other [additional, more] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, offspring]. word study 20 So Jared [the descendant, a man of the earth] lived a total of 962 [nine hundred sixty and two, a long and full] years, and then he died [came to his end, passed away, breathed his last]. word study 21 When Enoch [dedicated, Hanoch] was 65 [five and sixty] years old, he [began to, came to be] became the father [to beget, gave birth to] of Methuselah [a man of the dart or spear]. word study 22 And after he had become the father of Methuselah [the man of the dart, or the man with a spear], Enoch [dedicated, or initiated] walked [to go, or to habitually walk] with God [the supreme Creator, Elohim] 300 years [three hundred] and had other sons [male children, or descendants] and daughters [female children, or women]. word study 23 So Enoch [a dedicated one, Hanoch] lived [existed, came into being] a total of [comprising, all the days of] 365 years. word study 24 Enoch [dedicated to God, Hanoch] walked [lived in close relationship, went habitually] with [in fellowship, near] God [Elohim, the supreme One], and then he was [became, is] no more [not found, disappeared], because [for the reason that] God [the Almighty, divine] had taken [removed, received] him away [to heaven, into His presence]. word study 25 When Methuselah [a man of great longevity] was 187 years old [a hundred and eighty-seven years, a significant lifespan], he became [begat, gave birth to, fathered] the father of Lamech [a descendant of Cain, a man before the Flood]. word study 26 And after [following, subsequent to] he had become the father [begat, gave birth to] of Lamech, Methuselah [man of the dart, or spear] lived [experienced life, had existence] 782 years [seven hundred and eighty-two, a long period of time] and had [begat, brought forth] other [additional, more] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, offspring]. word study 27 So Methuselah [a man of great longevity, son of Enoch] lived a total of 969 [nine hundred sixty-nine, a long and full life] years, and then he died [passed away, came to his end, breathed his last]. word study 28 When Lamech [a descendant of Cain, lived before the Flood] was 182 years old [one hundred and eighty-two, a specific period of time], he had [begat, became the father of] a son [a child, a male descendant]. word study 29 And he named him Noah, saying, “May this one [the same one, our comforter] comfort us [show us pity, bring us solace] in the labor [hard work, toil] and toil [painful effort, sorrow] of our hands [our strength, our ability] caused by the ground [the earth, the land] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] has cursed [execrated, brought a curse upon].” word study 30 And after he had become the father [begat, gave birth to] of Noah [the patriarch who built the ark], Lamech [a descendant of Cain] lived [had life, was quickened] 595 years [five hundred and ninety-five years, a long period of time] and had [begat, gave birth to] other [additional] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, women]. word study 31 So Lamech [lived out his days, came to the end of his life] lived a total of 777 [seven hundred seventy-seven, a complete span of years] years, and then he [passed away, breathed his last, died a natural death] died. word study 32 After Noah [the patriarch who built the ark] was 500 [five hundred, a significant numerical value] years old [a period of time, a stage of life], he became [to beget, to father] the father of Shem [the eldest son, the ancestor of many Semitic tribes], Ham [the son associated with hot southern lands], and Japheth [the ancestor of many nations, including those living in the Mediterranean region]. word study
