1 Then a shoot [new sprout, branch] will spring up from the stump [stock, trunk] of Jesse [I possess, a member of Judah], and a Branch [rod, twig] from his roots [foundation, source] will bear fruit [be fruitful, produce]. word study 2 The Spirit [breath of life, divine energy] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will rest [settle down, remain] on Him— the Spirit [wind, mind and emotions] of wisdom [skill, prudence, good judgment] and understanding [discernment, knowledge], the Spirit of counsel [advice, plan] and strength [might, power], the Spirit of knowledge [insight, awareness] and fear [reverence, respect] of the LORD [the supreme God]. word study 3 And He will delight [take great pleasure, have happiness] in the fear [reverence, respect, awe] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. He will not judge [vindicate, govern] by what His eyes [sight, perception] see, and He will not decide [rebuke, correct] by what His ears [hearing, ability to listen] hear, word study 4 but with [true, divine] righteousness He will judge [vindicate, govern] the [needy, oppressed] poor, and with [fair, impartial] equity He will decide [reprove, correct] for the [humble, meek] lowly of the earth. He will strike [smite, punish] the earth with the rod [a rod or staff, a sceptre] of His mouth and slay [destroy, put to death] the [morally wrong, guilty] wicked with the breath [spirit, life-giving power] of His lips. word study 5 Righteousness [justice, moral integrity] will be the belt [girdle, sash] around His hips [loins, waist], and faithfulness [trustworthiness, fidelity] the sash [girdle, cord] around His waist [reins, innermost being]. word study 6 The wolf will live with [in harmony, together] the lamb [a young ram, innocent and gentle], and the leopard [a fierce and powerful predator] will lie down [rest, stretch out] with the goat [a kid, a young one]; the calf [a young male, nearly grown] and young lion [a lion’s whelp] and fatling [a well-fed animal, healthy and strong] will be together [united, in unity], and a little [small, young] child [a youth, from infancy to adolescence] will lead [guide, direct] them. word study 7 The cow [heifer, young female] will graze with the bear [slow-moving animal], their young [youth, children] will lie down [stretch, rest] together [in unity, as one], and the lion will eat straw [stubble, fodder] like the ox [cattle, domesticated animal]. word study 8 The infant [suckling child, nursing] will play [delight, take pleasure] by the cobra’s [venomous snake, asp] den [hole, cavern], and the toddler [weaned child, young one] will reach [stretch out, extend] into the viper’s [poisonous serpent, adder] nest [den, hole]. word study 9 They will neither [cause harm or pain] harm nor [ruin or destroy] destroy on all [every part of] My holy [set apart, sacred] mountain, for the earth [land, world] will be full [completely filled] of the knowledge [deep understanding, intimacy] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] as the sea [large body of water] is full [covered, filled to the brim] of water [life-giving, refreshing]. word study 10 On that day [in the future, at a specific time] the Root [source or foundation] of Jesse [I possess, a member of the tribe of Judah] will stand [be established, endure] as a banner [ensign, signal] for the peoples [nations, Gentiles]. The nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrews] will seek [ask, worship] Him, and His place of rest [dwelling, abode] will be [exist as, come into being] glorious [full of glory, honor]. word study 11 On that day [in the same day, at that time] the Lord [Adonay, the supreme ruler] will extend His hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] a second time [again, once more] to recover [to buy, to redeem] the remnant [what is left, a surviving group] of His people [Amaw, a nation] from Assyria [Asshur, a region in the north], from Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], from Pathros [a region in southern Egypt], from Cush [Ethiopia, the region south of Egypt], from Elam [a region in the east], from Shinar [Babylonia, a land of old], from Hamath [an ancient city in Syria], and from the islands [coastlands, habitable spots] of the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water]. word study 12 He will raise [lift up, set up] a banner [ensign, flag, standard] for the nations [Gentiles, non-Israeli peoples] and gather [assemble, collect] the exiles [outcasts, scattered ones] of Israel [Jacob’s descendants]; He will collect [gather together, assemble] the scattered [dispersed, thrust away] of Judah [the tribe of Judah] from the four [ends] corners [wings, extremities] of the earth [land, world]. word study 13 Then the jealousy [envy, strong feelings of resentment] of Ephraim will depart [be removed, turn aside], and the adversaries [enemies, those who vex] of Judah will be cut off [destroyed, eliminated]. Ephraim will no longer [not at all] envy [feel envious of, rival] Judah, nor will Judah harass [vex, distress] Ephraim. word study 14 They will swoop down [fly, swiftly attack] on the slopes [shoulders, upper regions] of the Philistines [immigrants from other places] to the west [toward the sea, in the direction of the Mediterranean]; together [united, in harmony] they will plunder [spoil, violently take] the sons [descendants, people] of the east [the region in front, the area before them]. They will lay their hands [extend their power, exert their control] on Edom [the region of Esau’s descendants] and Moab [the land of Lot’s descendants], and the Ammonites [the people of Ammon, a son of Lot] will be subject [obedient, under their rule] to them. word study 15 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will devote [utterly destroy, dedicate to destruction] to destruction the gulf [tongue, a body of water] of the Sea [a large body of water, the west or seaward region] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa]; with a scorching [mighty, burning] wind He will sweep [wave, shake] His hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] over the Euphrates [a river, a flood]. He will split it into seven streams [brooks, small rivers] for men to cross with dry sandals. word study 16 There will be a [raised public] highway for the remnant [surviving ones, leftovers] of His people [nation, community] who remain [are left, spared] from Assyria [the land of the Assyrians], as there was [in the same manner] for Israel [the chosen ones, descendants of Jacob] when they came up [ascended, journeyed] from the land [earth, territory] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa]. word study
