Nehemiah 3
BSA1 At the Sheep Gate [where the flock entered], Eliashib [God restores] the high priest [one who serves God and leads others in worship] and his fellow priests [brothers in ministry] began rebuilding [restoring, renovating]. They dedicated [set apart, consecrated] it and installed [stood up, established] its doors [entrances, gateways]. After building [constructing, establishing] as far as the Tower of the Hundred [a tower of great size, a landmark] and the Tower of Hananel [God has favored], they dedicated [consecrated, made holy] the wall [a barrier, a boundary]. word study 2 The men [inhabitants, people] of Jericho [its moon, a city in Palestine] built [constructed, established] next to Eliashib, and Zaccur [mindful, remembering] son [descendant, offspring] of Imri [a father, ancestor] built [repaired, restored] next to them [beside, adjacent to]. word study 3 The Fish [group of fish] Gate [entrance to the city, access point] was rebuilt [restored, renovated] by the sons [descendants, family members] of Hassenaah [thorny acacia tree, a place in Palestine]. They laid [placed, positioned] its beams [wooden supports, framework] and installed [set up, established] its doors [entry points, gateways], bolts [locks, fasteners], and bars [security features, fortifications]. word study 4 Next to them, Meremoth [a prophet] son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz [meaning’thorn’], made repairs [strengthened, restored]. Next to him, Meshullam [meaning’paid’] son of Berechiah [meaning’Jehovah blesses’], the son of Meshezabel [an Israelite who lived during the time of exile], made repairs [repaired, rebuilt]; and next to him, Zadok [meaning’righteous’] son of Baana [meaning’in affliction’] made repairs [restored, renewed] as well. word study 5 Next to him, the Tekoites [inhabitants of Tekoa, a town in Judah] made repairs, but their nobles [great, powerful leaders] did not put their shoulders [neck] to the work [service, labor] under their supervisors [refusing to submit to authority]. word study 6 The Jeshanah [old, ancient] Gate was repaired by Joiada [Jehovah knows] son of Paseah and Meshullam [given of God] son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams [to meet, construct with beams] and installed its doors [swinging valves, gate entrances], bolts [locks, security fasteners], and bars [wooden security rods, fortifications]. word study 7 Next to them, repairs were made by Melatiah [from the hilly city] the Gibeonite, Jadon [meaning thankful] the Meronothite, and the men [individuals, people] of Gibeon [a Levitical city] and Mizpah [a watchtower, a place of observation], who were under the authority [leadership, jurisdiction] of the governor [a leader, official] of the region [area, territory] west of the Euphrates [a major river]. word study 8 Next to them, Uzziel [my strength is God, son of a goldsmith] son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths [refiners, skilled craftsmen], made repairs, and next to him, Hananiah [God has favored, son of a perfumer] son of the perfumer [apothecary, maker of fragrances] made repairs. They fortified [strengthened, secured] Jerusalem [the city of peace] as far as [until, up to] the Broad [wide, spacious] Wall. word study 9 Next to them, Rephaiah [healed of Jehovah] son of Hur, ruler [leader, person in charge] of a half-district [half, middle part] of Jerusalem [city of peace], made repairs [strengthened, fortified]; word study 10 next to him, Jedaiah [son of a noble family] son of Harumaph made repairs [strengthened, restored] across from his house [dwelling place, residence]; and next to him, Hattush [a descendant of a prominent family] son of Hashabneiah [a Levite, a servant of God] made repairs [rebuilt, renovated]. word study 11 Malchijah [my king is Jehovah] son of Harim [dedicated] and Hasshub [a Merarite Levite] son of Pahath-moab [pit of Moab] repaired [strengthened, fortified] another [second, another portion] section, as well as the Tower [a tall structure] of the Ovens [furnaces, places of fire and heat]. word study 12 And next to them, Shallum [descendant of] son of Hallohesh, ruler [leader, person in charge] of the other half-district [half, middle part] of Jerusalem, made repairs [strengthened, restored], with the help [assistance, support] of his daughters [female children, women]. word study 13 The Valley [lowland, deep gorge] Gate was repaired [strengthened, fortified] by Hanun [gracious, merciful] and the residents [inhabitants, dwellers] of Zanoah [cast off, forsaken]. They rebuilt [restored, established] it, installed [set up, established] its doors [gates, entrances], bolts [locks, fasteners], and bars [security beams, fortifications], and repaired [restored, renewed] a thousand [large number, multitude] cubits [units of measurement, lengths] of the wall [barrier, protection] as far as [until, up to] the Dung [refuse, waste] Gate [entrance, doorway]. word study 14 The Dung Gate [Refuse Gate, gate of the dunghill] was repaired by Malchijah [my king is Jehovah] son of Rechab [rider], ruler [leader, person in charge] of the district [region, area of land] of Beth-haccherem [house of the vineyard]. He rebuilt [built, established] it and installed [set up, put in place] its doors [gates, entrances], bolts [locks, fasteners], and bars [strong wooden beams, secure fastenings]. word study 15 The Fountain Gate [gate of the spring, entrance to the fountain] was repaired by Shallun [Shallum, the son of Col-hozeh, a leader] son of Col-hozeh [all-seeing, a name signifying wisdom], ruler [leader, person in charge] of the district [region, area] of Mizpah [watchtower, a place of observation]. He rebuilt [restored, reconstructed] it, roofed [covered, put a roof on] it, and installed [set up, established] its doors [gates, entrances], bolts [locks, bars], and bars [strong wooden beams, security measures]. He also repaired [restored, strengthened] the wall [barrier, protection] of the Pool [reservoir, water source] of Shelah [Siloah, sent] near the king’s [royal, belonging to the king] garden [enclosed area, a place of beauty], as far as [until, up to] the stairs [steps, ascent] that descend [go down, lead downward] from the City [town, metropolis] of David [beloved, a leader]. word study 16 Beyond him, Nehemiah [the leader, son of God] son of Azbuk, ruler [leader, governor] of a half-district [region, area] of Beth-zur [house of the rock], made repairs [strengthened, restored] up to a point opposite [before, in front of] the tombs [graves, sepulchres] of David, as far as the artificial [man-made, constructed] pool [reservoir, water basin] and the House [dwelling place, temple] of the Mighty [strong, powerful ones]. word study 17 Next to him, the Levites [descendants of Levi, Israelite tribe] made repairs [strengthened, restored] under Rehum [meaning compassion] son of Bani [built, constructed], and next to him, Hashabiah [Jehovah has considered], ruler [leader, captain] of a half-district [part, region] of Keilah [fortified city], made repairs [restored, rebuilt] for his district [area, territory]. word study 18 Next to him, their countrymen [brethren, fellow Israelites] made repairs under Binnui [having God’s favor] son of Henadad [meaning favour of God], ruler [leader, person in charge] of the other half-district [half the region, a division] of Keilah [a fortified city, a place of strength]. word study 19 And next to him, Ezer [a leader] son of Jeshua, ruler [leader, person in charge] of Mizpah [a watchtower, a place of observation], repaired [strengthened, restored] another section [a measured portion, a part] opposite [across from, before] the Ascent [the way up, the path] to the Armory [the storehouse of weapons, the arsenal], near [close to, adjacent to] the angle [the corner, the turning point] in the wall [the barrier, the fortification]. word study 20 Next to him, Baruch [blessed, a name signifying divine favor] son of Zabbai [pure, a descendant of a faithful lineage] diligently [with earnestness, zeal] repaired [to strengthen, restore] another section [a measured portion, a part of the wall], from the angle [the corner, a turning point] to the doorway [the entrance, a point of access] of the house [the dwelling place, a residence] of Eliashib [God restores, a high priest] the high priest [a spiritual leader, one who serves God]. word study 21 Next to him, Meremoth [a priest] son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz [meaning’thorn’], repaired [strengthened, rebuilt] another section [portion, measure], from the doorway [entrance] of the house [dwelling place, temple] of Eliashib [God restores, high priest] to the end [limit, completion] of the house [place, dwelling]. word study 22 And next to him, the priests [men of God, spiritual leaders] from the surrounding area [the plain, lowland] made repairs [strengthened, restored]. word study 23 Beyond them [after them, past them], Benjamin [son of the right hand] and Hasshub [a Merarite Levite] made repairs [strengthened, restored] in front of [before, opposite] their house [dwelling place, family home], and next to them [beside, near], Azariah [help of God] son of Maaseiah [work of Jehovah], the son of Ananiah [protected by God], made repairs [strengthened, fortified] beside [near, adjacent to] his house [own dwelling, residence]. word study 24 After [following, subsequent to] him, Binnui [built up, strengthened] son [descendant, offspring] of Henadad [favour, gracious gift] repaired [restored, strengthened] another [second, additional] section [portion, measure], from [starting at, proceeding from] the house [dwelling place, family home] of Azariah [helped by God, assisted by the Lord] to [extending to, reaching] the angle [corner, turning point] and [including, as far as] the corner [juncture, meeting point], word study 25 and Palal [son of Uzai] son of Uzai made repairs opposite the angle [corner, turning point] and the tower [high watchtower, elevated stage] that juts out [comes out, extends] from the upper [high, lofty] palace of the king [royal house, sovereign’s dwelling] near the courtyard [open space, village] of the guard [guardhouse, prison]. Next to him, Pedaiah [Jehovah has ransomed, redeemed] son of Parosh word study 26 and the temple servants [Nethinim, helpers of the Levites] living on the hill of Ophel [a fortified ridge, stronghold] made repairs opposite the Water Gate [entrance to the city, source of refreshment] toward the east [direction of sunrise] and the tower [elevated stage, watchpost] that juts out [extends, protrudes]. word study 27 And next to them, the Tekoites [inhabitants of Tekoa] repaired another section [a second measure, from over-against], from a point opposite [before, facing] the great [large, prominent] tower [a tall structure] that juts out [comes out, extends] to the wall [a barrier, a fortification] of Ophel [a fortified ridge, a stronghold]. word study 28 Above [over, from a higher position] the Horse Gate [where chariot horses passed], each of the priests [spiritual leaders, mediators between God and people] made repairs [strengthened, restored] in front of [opposite, across from] his own house [dwelling place, family home]. word study 29 Next to them, Zadok [son of the priestly family] son of Immer made repairs [strengthened, restored] opposite [before, in front of] his house [dwelling place, family home], and next to him, Shemaiah [heard by God] son of Shecaniah, the guard [keeper, watchman] of the East Gate [entrance, doorway], made repairs [fortified, renewed]. word study 30 Next to him, Hananiah [God has favored] son of Shelemiah, as well as Hanun [gracious] the sixth [in sequence, following five others] son of Zalaph, repaired [strengthened, made secure] another section [a measured portion, a part]. Next to them, Meshullam [blessed, favored by God] son of Berechiah made repairs [restored, renewed] opposite [across from, before] his own [personal, private] quarters [chamber, room]. word study 31 Next to him, Malchijah [son of the refiner], one of the goldsmiths [craftsmen who work with gold], made repairs as far as the house [dwelling place] of the temple servants [Nethinim, attendants] and the merchants [traders, those who exchange goods], opposite [before, in front of] the Inspection Gate [gate of Miphkad, gate of command], and as far as the upper room [lofty place, chamber] above the corner [angle, pinnacle]. word study 32 And between [the space or interval] the upper room [a lofty place, chamber] above the corner [a pinnacle or angle] and the Sheep Gate [a city entrance, door], the goldsmiths [refiners, craftsmen] and merchants [traders, businessmen] made repairs [strengthened, restored]. word study
