1 O LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of hosts], God [El, the powerful One] of vengeance [avenging justice, punishment], O God [the Almighty] of vengeance [retribution, judgment], shine forth [be revealed, show yourself clearly]. word study 2 Rise up [Lift up thyself, be lifted up], O Judge [ruler and vindicator] of the earth [land, the world]; render [send back, pay back, give] a reward [recompense, desert] to the proud [arrogant, lofty, the proud leaders]. word study 3 How long [till when, for how much longer] will the wicked [morally wrong, sinful people], O LORD [Yehovah, the great God], how long [when, for how much longer] will the wicked [those who are guilty of crime or sin] exult [jump for joy, rejoice triumphantly, celebrate in triumph]? word study 4 They pour out [utter, speak] arrogant [proud, bold] words [speaking boastfully]; all [every, everything] workers [doers, performers] of iniquity [evil, wickedness] boast [praise themselves, speak proudly]. word study 5 They crush [bruise, oppress] Your people [nation, those who belong to You], O LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel]; they oppress [afflict, treat cruelly] Your heritage [inheritance, those entrusted to Your care]. word study 6 They kill [slay, murder] the widow [a woman whose husband has died, often left alone and vulnerable] and the foreigner [sojourner, stranger, one lacking inherited rights]; they murder [kill with intent, take the life of] the fatherless [orphan, child without a father, one in need of care and protection]. word study 7 They say, “The LORD [Jah, the self-existent One] does not see [will not look after, is unaware of]; the God [Elohim, the supreme Ruler] of Jacob [the father of the Israelites] pays no heed [does not consider, will not regard].” word study 8 Take notice [consider, understand], O senseless [brutish, stupid] among the people [a nation, a community]! O fools [stupid, silly ones], when [how long, at what time] will you be wise [prudent, thoughtful]? word study 9 He who [planted, established] affixed the ear [organ of hearing], can He not [absolutely] hear [listen, obey]? He who formed [shaped] the eye [organ of sight], can He not [absolutely] see [perceive, understand]? word study 10 He who [chastiseth, instructs] admonishes the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples], does He not [certainly, without fail] discipline [correct, punish, teach]? He who teaches [guides, instructs] man [the human, Adam], does He lack [not have, be without] knowledge [understanding, insight]? word study 11 The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] knows [to ascertain by seeing, to learn] the thoughts [plans, devices] of man [human beings, Adam’s descendants], that they [specifically them, as a group] are [in reality, by nature] futile [vanity, empty, a breath of air, useless]. word study 12 Blessed [happy, fortunate] is the man You discipline [chasten, correct, instruct], O LORD [Jah, the supreme God], and teach [guide, instruct] from Your law [instruction, Torah, divine guidance], word study 13 to grant him [peaceful] relief from days [periods, seasons] of trouble [adversity, evil, bad or evil, referring to moral or natural harm], until [as far as, at the point when] a pit [a grave, corruption, a pit or grave, often used figuratively to describe destruction] is dug [excavated, pierced, to dig or pierce] for the wicked [morally wrong, guilty, someone who is morally wrong, a bad person who is guilty of crime or sin]. word study 14 For [because of this reason] the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] will not [under any circumstances] forsake [leave or abandon] His people [nation or community, like Israel]; He will never [at no time] abandon [loosen or relinquish, like forsaking an inheritance] His heritage [inheritance, something passed down, like a family heirloom]. word study 15 Surely judgment [justice, decisions made in righteousness] will again be righteous [just, fair, and holy], and all [every one of] the upright [straight, just, and sincere] in heart [the inner being, including feelings, and intellect] will follow [support, obey, and adhere to] it [the righteous judgment]. word study 16 Who [what person, which one] will rise up [stand against, take a stand] for me against the wicked [evil-doers, those who do evil]? Who [what person, which one] will stand [take a position, be established] for me against the workers [those who practice, do] of iniquity [evil, wickedness, unrighteousness]? word study 17 Unless [if not, except] the LORD [Yehovah, the divine Helper] had been my helper [aid, assistance, support], I would soon have dwelt [lived, stayed, resided] in the abode [place, dwelling] of silence [stillness, death, quiet]. word study 18 If [when, at the moment] I say [speak, utter], “My foot [step, path] is slipping [shaking, wavering],” Your loving devotion [kindness, mercy, faithful love], O [exalted, sovereign] LORD [Yehovah], supports [holds up, comforts, sustains] me. word study 19 When [in the multitude of my thoughts, with anxious worries] anxiety [disquieting thoughts, troubled mind] overwhelms me, Your [Thy, divine] consolation [comforts, solace, to bring joy] delights [to take pleasure, to find joy] my [inner, living being] soul [the essence of a person, living being]. word study 20 Can a corrupt [thoroughly wicked, morally decayed] throne [seat of power] be Your ally [unite with You, have fellowship]— one devising [framing, plotting] mischief [trouble, evil] by decree [statute, law, established rule]? word study 21 They band [gather, assemble] together against the [soul, living being] righteous [just, upright] and condemn [declare guilty, sentence] the innocent [guiltless, morally clean] to death [physical or spiritual destruction]. word study 22 But the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] has been my stronghold [high tower, defense], and my God [Elohim, the one supreme God] is my rock [a boulder, foundation] of refuge [safe place, shelter from the storm]. word study 23 He will bring upon them their own iniquity [evil, wickedness, or trouble] and destroy [completely get rid of, cut off] them for their wickedness [bad, morally harmful]. The LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] our God [Elohim, the one true deity] will destroy [cut them off, put an end to] them. word study
