2 Chronicles 11:7 Summary

This verse lists some of the cities that Rehoboam built up for defense in Judah, including Beth-zur, Soco, and Adullam. These cities were important strategic locations that helped to keep Judah safe from attack, much like the cities of refuge mentioned in Numbers 35:6-7. By building up these cities, Rehoboam was taking proactive steps to protect his people, just as we are called to be proactive in our own spiritual lives, as seen in Ephesians 6:10-18. As we reflect on this verse, we can consider how we can establish strong defenses in our own lives against spiritual attacks, and trust in God's sovereignty to guide and protect us, as expressed in Psalm 91:1-16.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Rehoboam build up these cities for defense in Judah?

Rehoboam built up these cities to protect Judah from potential attacks, as seen in 2 Chronicles 11:5, and to establish a strong defense system, similar to what King Solomon had done in 1 Kings 9:15-19.

What is the significance of the cities listed in 2 Chronicles 11:7?

The cities listed, including Beth-zur, Soco, and Adullam, were strategic locations that helped to secure Judah's borders and provide a safe haven for its people, much like the cities of refuge mentioned in Numbers 35:6-7 and Deuteronomy 19:1-13.

How does this verse relate to the rest of the biblical narrative?

This verse is part of the larger story of the division of Israel and Judah, as seen in 1 Kings 12:1-33, and it highlights Rehoboam's efforts to establish a strong and secure kingdom, which is also seen in other biblical accounts, such as 2 Chronicles 11:5-12:16.

What can we learn from Rehoboam's actions in this verse?

Rehoboam's actions demonstrate the importance of being proactive and prepared, as seen in Proverbs 22:3, and of trusting in God's sovereignty, as expressed in Psalm 37:3-7, even in the face of uncertainty and potential danger.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some areas in my life where I need to establish a strong defense against spiritual attacks, and how can I apply the principles seen in this verse to those areas?
  2. How can I, like Rehoboam, be proactive in preparing for the challenges that lie ahead, and what role does faith and trust in God play in that preparation?
  3. What are some strategic locations or relationships in my life that provide a safe haven or support during difficult times, and how can I nurture and prioritize those?
  4. In what ways can I, like the kings of old, seek to establish a strong and secure foundation for my life and my community, and what biblical principles can guide me in that pursuit?

The cities hitherto mentioned were situated in the Hill Country, but the position of the Soco here mentioned and Adullam is uncertain. Two places bore the name Soco or Socoh, one situated in the Shephelah (Joshua 15:35; 1 Samuel 17:1, R.V.), and one in the Hill Country (“the mountains,” Joshua 15:48). For Adullam cp.
