2 Chronicles 28:2 Summary

[This verse tells us that King Ahaz did not follow God's ways, but instead followed the bad examples of the kings of Israel. He even made idols to worship the false gods of the surrounding nations, which is something that God clearly condemns in Exodus 20:4-5 and Deuteronomy 12:3. This shows us the importance of following God's ways and avoiding the influences of the world, as seen in Romans 12:2 and 1 John 5:21. By staying grounded in God's Word and seeking to follow His ways, we can avoid the dangers of idolatry and rebellion against God.]

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did King Ahaz walk in the ways of the kings of Israel instead of following God's ways?

King Ahaz walked in the ways of the kings of Israel because he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, unlike his father David, as seen in 2 Chronicles 28:1, and this led him to follow the sinful patterns of the kings of Israel, such as those described in 1 Kings 12:25-33.

What does it mean to make cast images of the Baals?

Making cast images of the Baals refers to the creation of idols to worship the false gods of the surrounding nations, as condemned in Deuteronomy 12:3 and Jeremiah 11:17, which is a clear violation of the first commandment in Exodus 20:4-5.

How does this verse relate to the overall theme of 2 Chronicles?

This verse shows how King Ahaz's actions led to the decline of Judah, as seen in the rest of 2 Chronicles 28, and serves as a warning against following the ways of the world and idolatry, as also seen in 2 Chronicles 24:18 and 2 Chronicles 34:3.

What can we learn from King Ahaz's example about the dangers of idolatry?

King Ahaz's example teaches us that idolatry can lead to further sin and rebellion against God, as seen in 2 Chronicles 28:3, and that we must be careful to avoid the influences of the world and instead follow God's ways, as commanded in Romans 12:2 and 1 John 5:21.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I may be following the ways of the world instead of God's ways, and how can I change this?
  2. How can I ensure that I am not creating 'idols' in my own life, such as prioritizing wealth or status over my relationship with God?
  3. What are some ways that I can stay grounded in God's Word and avoid the influences of the world, as seen in Psalm 119:11 and Colossians 3:2?
  4. How can I apply the lessons from King Ahaz's example to my own life and relationships, and what are some ways that I can seek accountability and support in following God's ways?

Sundry holy prophets, as Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, &c., declaimed earnestly against his abominable practices, and proclaimed hell-fire in case he repented not; but he either turned the deaf ear to them, or, if he gave them the hearing, yet he heeded them not; luporum instar, ingenium non mutavit.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 28:2

(2) And made also molten images for Baalim.—For the Baals, i.e., the different aspects or avatars of the Canaanite god. This clause is added by the chronicler, in explanation of the former one; “the way of the kings of Israel” was the state recognition of Baal worship, side by side with that of Jehovah (2 Chronicles 21:6; 2 Chronicles 22:3-4; comp. 2 Chronicles 23:17). But possibly both this and the first clause of 2 Chronicles 28:3 have fallen out of the text of Kings. (So Thenius on that passage.)
