2 Kings 14:3 Summary
This verse tells us that Amaziah, the king of Judah, did what was right in God's eyes, but he didn't follow God as closely as King David did. Amaziah mostly followed the example of his own father, Joash. This means that even though Amaziah tried to do good, he didn't have the same kind of faith and love for God that King David had, as seen in Psalm 51:10 and Psalm 23:1-4. We can learn from Amaziah's example by trying to do what is right, but also by seeking to have a personal relationship with God and following Him with all our hearts, as encouraged in Romans 8:28 and John 10:27-28.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David had done?
This means that Amaziah obeyed God's commands, but did not have the same level of devotion or faith as King David, who is considered a model of faithfulness in the Bible, as seen in Acts 13:22 and 1 Kings 11:4.
Why did Amaziah follow the example of his father Joash instead of King David?
The Bible does not give a specific reason, but it may be because Joash was his immediate father and the one he had a personal relationship with, as seen in 2 Kings 12:1-3, whereas King David was an ancestor he may have only known about through stories and history.
Is it good enough to just do what is right in the eyes of the LORD, or is there more to following God?
While doing what is right is important, the Bible also emphasizes the importance of having a personal relationship with God and following Him with all one's heart, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:5 and Matthew 22:37-38.
How can we apply Amaziah's example to our own lives?
We can learn from Amaziah's example by striving to obey God's commands and following the examples of faithful believers, but also seeking to deepen our personal relationship with God and follow Him with all our hearts, as encouraged in Ephesians 5:1-2 and 1 Corinthians 11:1.
