Context — Hushai’s Warning Saves David
20When Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the brook,” she replied. The men searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
21After the men had gone, Ahimaaz and Jonathan climbed up out of the well and went to inform King David, saying, “Get up and cross over the river at once, for Ahithophel has given this advice against you.” 22So David and all the people with him got up and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed the Jordan.Cross References

2 Samuel 17:20 Summary
[This verse tells us about a woman who helped two men, Ahimaaz and Jonathan, escape from Absalom's servants by telling them they had crossed over a brook. This was a clever trick to keep them safe, similar to how God protected the Israelites in Exodus 14:13-14. The woman's actions show us the importance of being wise and loyal, and using our words and actions to help others, as taught in Proverbs 10:32 and Ephesians 4:29.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the woman at the house deceive Absalom's servants?
The woman at the house deceived Absalom's servants to protect Ahimaaz and Jonathan, who were on a mission to inform King David about Ahithophel's advice, as seen in 2 Samuel 17:20. This act of deception was done out of loyalty to King David and to prevent harm from coming to Ahimaaz and Jonathan, similar to the actions of Rahab in Joshua 2:4-6.
What was the significance of the brook mentioned in this verse?
The brook mentioned in 2 Samuel 17:20 was likely a body of water that Ahimaaz and Jonathan had crossed, and the woman used this as a diversion to throw off Absalom's servants, similar to how God used the Jordan River to divide the Israelites from their enemies in Joshua 3:13-17.
How did the woman's actions reflect her character?
The woman's actions in 2 Samuel 17:20 reflect her character as a wise and loyal person, willing to take risks to protect those in need, as seen in her quick thinking to spread grain over the well in 2 Samuel 17:19. Her actions are similar to the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31:10-31, who is known for her kindness and wisdom.
What can we learn from the woman's example in this verse?
We can learn from the woman's example in 2 Samuel 17:20 the importance of loyalty, wisdom, and quick thinking in times of crisis, as well as the value of protecting and serving others, as taught in Galatians 5:13-14 and Matthew 25:31-46.
