Context — Gabriel Interprets Daniel’s Vision
25Through his craft and by his hand, he will cause deceit to prosper, and in his own mind he will make himself great. In a time of peace he will destroy many, and he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken off, but not by human hands.
26The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been spoken is true. Now you must seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.” 27I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was confounded by the vision; it was beyond understanding.Cross References

Daniel 8:25 Summary
This verse is talking about a future king who will come to power and cause a lot of destruction, but ultimately be defeated by God. He will be very proud and think he is great, but his pride will be his downfall, as seen in Proverbs 16:18. Even when things seem peaceful, he will still cause trouble, but God will ultimately bring him down, not by human effort, but by His own power, which is a reminder that God is always in control, as seen in Psalm 2:9. This is a reminder to always trust in God and not in human strength, and to stay vigilant and prepared, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:3.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the 'insolent king' mentioned in Daniel 8:23, and how does he relate to the events of Daniel 8:25?
The 'insolent king' is a future ruler who will come to power and cause great destruction, as seen in Daniel 8:24-25. His actions are a fulfillment of the prophecy spoken of in Daniel 8:23, and his ultimate defeat is foretold in Daniel 8:25, where it says he will be 'broken off, but not by human hands', which is reminiscent of the stone that strikes the statue in Daniel 2:34-35, which represents God's ultimate judgment.
What does it mean for the king to 'make himself great in his own mind'?
This phrase suggests that the king will have an exaggerated sense of his own importance and power, similar to the pride and arrogance of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4:30, which ultimately led to his downfall, as seen in Daniel 4:31-33. This mindset is also condemned in Proverbs 16:18, which says 'Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall'.
How can the king 'destroy many' in a time of peace, as mentioned in Daniel 8:25?
This phrase indicates that the king's destructive actions will be unexpected and will occur during a time when people feel safe and secure, much like the attack on the flock in 1 Peter 5:8, where the devil is described as a roaring lion seeking to devour. This emphasizes the need for believers to always be vigilant and prepared, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:3, which warns against being caught off guard by the coming of the Lord.
What does it mean for the king to be 'broken off, but not by human hands'?
This phrase suggests that the king's downfall will be supernatural, and will be brought about by God's direct intervention, rather than by human effort or military might, which is similar to the way that God brought down the walls of Jericho in Joshua 6:20, and the way that God will ultimately bring about the defeat of all His enemies, as seen in Psalm 2:9 and Revelation 19:15
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways in which I may be making myself great in my own mind, and how can I humble myself before God?
- How can I be prepared for the unexpected challenges and attacks that may come my way, and what role does faith and trust in God play in this preparation?
- In what ways can I be a source of peace and comfort to those around me, even in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty, and how can I point them to the ultimate source of peace, which is Jesus Christ?
- What does it mean for me to 'stand against the Prince of princes', and how can I ensure that I am standing with Him, rather than against Him?
