22Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: It is not for your sake that I will act, O house of Israel, but for My holy name, which you profaned among the nations to which you went.
23I will show the holiness of My great name, which has been profaned among the nations—the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when I show My holiness in you before their eyes. 24For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land.Cross References

Ezekiel 36:22 Summary
[This verse is saying that God is going to act, but not because Israel deserves it, rather because He wants to protect and restore the honor of His name. He wants to show the nations that He is a powerful and faithful God, as seen in Ezekiel 36:23. This is similar to how God acted in the past, such as in Exodus 32:12, where He relented from punishing Israel for the sake of His own name. God's love for His people is still present, but His primary concern in this moment is to uphold the glory of His name.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does God say He is not acting for the sake of Israel in Ezekiel 36:22?
God is saying that His actions are motivated by the desire to protect and restore the honor of His holy name, which was profaned by Israel's disobedience, as seen in Ezekiel 36:20-21, rather than solely for the benefit of Israel itself.
What does it mean for God's name to be 'profaned' among the nations?
To profane God's name means to treat it as common or dishonorable, which is what happened when Israel's actions caused the surrounding nations to view God as powerless or unfaithful, as noted in Ezekiel 36:20, and also seen in the warnings of Leviticus 18:21 and 22:32.
Is God's primary concern really just about His own name and reputation?
While it may seem that way in this verse, God's concern for His name is closely tied to His love for His people and His desire to bless and redeem them, as seen in verses like Jeremiah 31:3 and John 3:16.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the Bible's teaching on God's character?
This verse highlights God's holiness and desire for glory, which is a theme throughout the Bible, from Isaiah 6:3 to Revelation 4:8, and is consistent with His actions in the Old Testament, such as in Exodus 32:12 and Numbers 14:13-16.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I, like Israel, may be profaning God's name through my actions or attitudes?
- How can I, as a representative of God, work to honor and glorify His name in my daily life?
- In what ways do I see God's concern for His name and reputation reflected in the world around me?
- What would it look like for me to prioritize God's glory and reputation in my own life, as He does in Ezekiel 36:22?
