Genesis 28:3 Summary

In Genesis 28:3, Isaac prays for Jacob to be blessed by God and to become a blessing to many people. This means that Isaac wants Jacob to experience God's love and provision in his life, and to use those blessings to make a positive impact on the world around him (see Matthew 5:13-16). As we reflect on this verse, we can ask ourselves how we can trust in God's promise to be with us and bless us, and how we can use our own lives to bless and serve others (see 2 Corinthians 9:6-8). By doing so, we can become part of a larger community of people who are seeking to follow God and make a difference in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for God to be called 'God Almighty' in Genesis 28:3?

In Genesis 28:3, God is called 'God Almighty', which emphasizes His all-powerful nature, as seen in other passages like Genesis 17:1 and Exodus 6:3, where this title is used to highlight God's ability to fulfill His promises and provide for His people.

Why does Isaac pray for Jacob to become a 'company of peoples' in Genesis 28:3?

Isaac's prayer for Jacob to become a 'company of peoples' is a reference to God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 17:4-6, where He promises to make Abraham the father of many nations, and this is now being passed down to Jacob as part of the Abrahamic covenant.

How does Genesis 28:3 relate to the rest of the biblical narrative?

Genesis 28:3 is part of the larger story of God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants, as seen in Genesis 12:1-3 and Galatians 3:6-9, and it sets the stage for the rest of Jacob's story and the history of the Israelites.

What can we learn from Isaac's blessing of Jacob in Genesis 28:3?

Isaac's blessing of Jacob in Genesis 28:3 teaches us about the importance of seeking God's blessing and provision in our lives, as well as the value of passing down spiritual heritage to future generations, as seen in Psalm 127:1-5 and Proverbs 17:6.

Trapp's Commentary on Genesis 28:3

Genesis 28:3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;Ver. 3. And God Almighty bless thee.] Here Isaac establishes the blessing to Jacob, lest haply he should think, that the blessing so got, would be of no force to him. God passeth by the evil of our actions, and blesseth the good.

Ellicott's Commentary on Genesis 28:3

(3) God Almighty.—Heb., El Shaddai. As it was Isaac’s purpose in this blessing to confirm Jacob in the possession of the promises made to Abraham, he is careful to use the same title as that borne by God in the covenant whereby the land of Canaan was given to his seed, and of which the sacrament of circumcision was the seal. (See Genesis 17:1.) A multitude of people.—Heb., a congregation of peoples. This is not the word used in Genesis 17:4, but one that signifies an assembly, especially one summoned for religious purposes. Like the Greek word for church, ecclesia, it comes from a root signifying” to convoke.” It subsequently became the regular phrase for “the congregation of Israel” (Leviticus 16:17), and implies even here that the nations descended from Jacob would have a religious significance.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Genesis 28:3

Verse 3. That thou mayest be a multitude of people] לקהל עמים likhal ammim. There is something very remarkable in the original words: they signify literally for an assembly, congregation, or church of peoples; referring no doubt to the Jewish Church in the wilderness, but more particularly to the Christian Church, composed of every kindred, and nation, and people, and tongue. This is one essential part of the blessing of Abraham. See Genesis 28:4.

Compare “a multitude of nations” in Genesis 17:5 (P).
