Context — Israel’s Punishment
2The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them.
3They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria. 4They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.Cross References

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it has been cut off from your mouth. For a nation has invaded My land, powerful and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and its fangs are the fangs of a lioness. It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree. It has stripped off the bark and thrown it away; the branches have turned white. |

The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, palm, and apple— all the trees of the orchard—are withered. Surely the joy of mankind has dried up. Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers of the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God, because the grain and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God. |

I sent rain on one city but withheld it from another. One field received rain; another without rain withered. People staggered from city to city for water to drink, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD. “I struck you with blight and mildew in your growing gardens and vineyards; the locust devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD. “I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD. “Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD. |
Hosea 9:2 Summary
[Hosea 9:2 tells us that when we turn away from God, even the things that normally bring us joy and provision will not be enough to satisfy us, as seen in the failure of the threshing floor and winepress to feed the Israelites. This is because true satisfaction and fulfillment can only come from a relationship with God (Psalm 16:11). The Israelites' experience teaches us that earthly sources of comfort are unreliable and that we must trust in God's promises and presence for our well-being (Jeremiah 2:13). By focusing on God and His Word, we can find true joy and provision, even in difficult times (Isaiah 58:11).]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of the threshing floor and winepress in Hosea 9:2?
The threshing floor and winepress represent the sources of food and drink for the Israelites, but in this context, they will not provide for them, symbolizing God's judgment and withdrawal of blessing, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:38-40 and Isaiah 5:10.
Why will the new wine fail them?
The new wine failing them indicates that even the things that bring them joy and celebration will be taken away, much like what is described in Isaiah 24:7 and Revelation 6:6, highlighting the severity of God's judgment on their idolatry and disobedience.
How does this verse relate to the Israelites' spiritual condition?
This verse shows that despite their external rituals and sacrifices, the Israelites' hearts are far from God, and their attempts to find sustenance and joy in earthly things will ultimately fail them, as prophesied in Amos 5:11 and Micah 6:15.
What is the main message of Hosea 9:2?
The main message is that God's people cannot find true satisfaction and provision in earthly things when they have turned away from Him, a theme also seen in Psalm 106:13-15 and Jeremiah 2:13.
Reflection Questions
- In what ways do I seek satisfaction and provision in earthly things rather than in God, and how can I redirect my focus to Him?
- How can I ensure that my heart remains true to God and that I do not fall into the trap of idolatry, as the Israelites did?
- What are some areas in my life where I am trying to find joy and fulfillment in things that will ultimately fail me, and how can I replace these with a pursuit of God's presence and promises?
- In what ways can I practically apply the lesson of Hosea 9:2 to my daily life, trusting in God's provision and faithfulness rather than in earthly sources of comfort and security?
