Judges 2:12 Summary
This verse means that the Israelites stopped following the one true God and instead started worshiping the false gods of the people around them, which made God very angry. This happened because they forgot what God had done for them, like bringing them out of slavery in Egypt, as seen in Exodus 20:2. We can learn from their mistake by remembering what God has done for us and keeping His commands, as seen in Deuteronomy 11:1. By doing this, we can avoid provoking God to anger and instead live a life that pleases Him, as encouraged in Psalm 119:35.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the Israelites forsake the Lord after all He had done for them?
The Israelites forgot the works of the Lord and the covenant He made with their fathers, as seen in Judges 2:10, and instead followed after the gods of the surrounding peoples, which is also warned against in Deuteronomy 6:14-15.
What does it mean to provoke the Lord to anger?
To provoke the Lord to anger means to sin against Him and disobey His commands, which is also seen in Psalm 78:40, where it says that the Israelites grieved God in the wilderness.
How can we avoid following after other gods like the Israelites did?
We can avoid following after other gods by remembering the works of the Lord, as seen in Psalm 103:2, and by keeping His commands, as seen in Deuteronomy 11:1, and by seeking a personal relationship with Him through prayer and Bible study, as encouraged in Jeremiah 29:12-13.
What are some examples of 'various gods of the peoples around' us today?
Today, 'various gods of the peoples around' us can be anything that we prioritize over the one true God, such as money, fame, power, or pleasure, as warned against in 1 Timothy 6:10 and Matthew 6:24.
Reflection Questions
