Joshua 22:23
Joshua 22:23 in Multiple Translations
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;
that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Jehovah; or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let Jehovah himself require it;
That we have made ourselves an altar, being false to the Lord, keep us not safe from death this day; and if for the purpose of offering burned offerings on it and meal offerings, or peace-offerings, let the Lord himself send punishment for it;
If our action of building an altar was to turn away from the Lord, or to use the altar to make burnt offerings or grain offerings or friendship offerings, then may the Lord punish us.
If we haue built vs an altar to returne away from the Lord, either to offer thereon burnt offering, or meate offering, or to offer peace offerings thereon, let the Lord himselfe require it:
[we are] building for ourselves an altar to turn back from after Jehovah, and if to cause to go up on it burnt-offering and present, and if to make on it peace-offerings — Jehovah Himself doth require [it].
that we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let the LORD himself require it.
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer on it burnt-offering, or meat-offering, or if to offer peace-offerings on it, let the LORD himself require it ;
And if we did it with that mind, that we might lay upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him require and judge:
If we have disobeyed one of Yahweh’s laws, we request that he should punish us. We did not build that new altar to completely burn animals as sacrifices to Yahweh, or to offer on it sacrifices of grain or sacrifices to maintain fellowship with God.

Context — The Altar of Witness
23If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice peace offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
24But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? 25For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD!’ So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.Cross References

Joshua 22:23 Summary
[This verse is saying that if the Israelites built an altar to turn away from the Lord, they would be held accountable by Him, which is a reminder that our actions have consequences, as seen in Galatians 6:7-8. The Israelites were trying to make sure they were doing the right thing and following the Lord's commands, just like we should be. We should always try to please the Lord and follow His ways, as encouraged in Ephesians 5:10 and Colossians 1:10. By doing so, we can avoid turning away from Him and instead, draw closer to Him, as promised in James 4:8.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to 'turn away' from the Lord in this verse?
To turn away from the Lord means to reject or abandon His ways and commands, as seen in Joshua 22:23, which is similar to the concept of turning away from God in Deuteronomy 31:16 and 2 Chronicles 34:3.
Is building an altar to the Lord always a bad thing?
Not always, as seen in Exodus 20:24-26, where the Lord instructs the Israelites to build an altar to Him, but in Joshua 22:23, the concern is that the altar might be used to turn away from the Lord and offer sacrifices that are not authorized by Him, as warned in Deuteronomy 12:13-14.
What does it mean for the Lord to 'hold us accountable'?
For the Lord to hold us accountable means that He will judge our actions and motives, as seen in Romans 14:12 and 2 Corinthians 5:10, and we will have to give an answer to Him for our deeds, which is a sobering thought that should motivate us to live a life pleasing to Him, as encouraged in Colossians 3:17.
How can we ensure that our worship is pleasing to the Lord?
We can ensure that our worship is pleasing to the Lord by following His commands and instructions, as seen in Deuteronomy 12:1-14 and Revelation 15:4, and by offering our sacrifices and offerings with a pure heart and a willingness to obey Him, as taught in Psalms 51:17 and Hebrews 13:15-16.
Reflection Questions

- What does it mean to fear the Lord, and how can I cultivate a healthy fear of Him in my life, as seen in Proverbs 1:7 and Isaiah 11:3?
- How can I be mindful of the example that I set for others, and make sure that my actions and words are pointing them to the Lord, as encouraged in Matthew 5:16 and 1 Timothy 4:12?
