Context — The Search for the Silver Cupgenerated

9If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
10“As you say,” replied the steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of blame.”
11So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
12The steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest—and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

Genesis 44:10 describes a tense moment where the steward addresses the brothers regarding the silver cup found in their possession. He asserts that only the one found with the cup will become a slave, while the others will be declared innocent. This scene unfolds as part of Joseph's test of his brothers, revealing their character and relationships, as seen in the surrounding verses.

The Key Word נְקִיִּם, ne.ki.Yimgenerated

The word נְקִיִּם (*nekiyyim*) is an adjective meaning 'innocent' or 'guiltless.' It conveys a sense of moral purity and freedom from blame, often used in contexts that emphasize integrity. This word appears in various forms throughout the Old Testament, highlighting its importance in legal and ethical discussions.

In this verse, the steward declares that the brothers who are not found with the cup shall be considered innocent. This use underscores the themes of justice and accountability in the narrative, as the steward differentiates between those who are guilty and those who are not.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against. The BSB has free of blame, which is also rendered as innocent in the ULB.

Where others part company with the BSB they part company over the word נְקִיִּםacquitted (LSV, YLT) emphasizes a legal aspect, while innocent (ULB) focuses on moral purity.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The main verb of the verse is וַיֹּ֕אמֶר, and he said, which governs the entire statement. The structure includes a conditional clause regarding the one found with the cup, followed by the declaration of the others' innocence.

The sentence is structured to emphasize the steward's authority and the consequences of the finding, with the phrase תִּהְי֥וּ נְקִיִּֽם serving as a clear declaration of the brothers' status.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates נְקִיִּם as καθαροί, which means 'clean' or 'pure.' This choice reflects a focus on moral and ceremonial cleanliness, aligning with the broader themes of purity in the law.

The translation choice indicates a slight widening of the term's application, emphasizing not just innocence but also a state of being free from moral or ritual impurity.

Slave

Jer. 2:14 (A.V.), but not there found in the original. In Rev. 18:13 the word “slaves” is the rendering of a Greek word meaning “bodies.” The Hebrew and Greek words for slave are usually rendered simply “servant,” “bondman,” or “bondservant.” Slavery as it existed under the Mosaic law has no modern parallel. That law did not originate but only regulated the already existing custom of slavery (Ex. 21:20, 21, 26, 27; Lev. 25:44-46; Josh. 9:6-27). The gospel in its spirit and genius is hostile to slavery in every form, which under its influence is gradually disappearing from among men.

Smith's Bible Dictionary

The institution of slavery was recognized, though not established, by the Mosaic law with a view to mitigate its hardship and to secure to every man his ordinary rights. I. Hebrew slaves. -- The circumstances under which a Hebrew might be reduced to servitude were-- (1) poverty; (2) the commission of theft; and (3) the exercise of paternal authority. In the first case, a man who had mortgaged his property, and was unable to support his family, might sell himself to another Hebrew, with a view both to obtain maintenance and perchance a surplus sufficient to redeem his property.
