19. Vows
Vows Jacob’s vow at Bethel:Genesis 28:20-22
If God will be with me, and will keep me in the way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and raiment to put on, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and Jehovah will be my God, then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that Thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto Thee.
Israel’s vow on approaching Canaan:Numbers 21:2 If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to utter destruction.
Jephthah’s vow,before his assault upon the Ammonites:Judges 11:30-31
If Thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, then it shall be that, whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
Hannah’s vow as she prayed for a child:1 Samuel 1:11
O Jehovah of hosts, if Thou wilt indeed look upon the affliction of Thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget Thine handmaid, but wilt give unto Thine handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto Jehovah all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
Absalom’s vow in Geshur:2 Samuel 15:8 If Jehovah shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah.
