AN altar] Compare this verse with Exodus 27:1. and you may see how farre this exceeded the altar of the tabernacle. For the temple it self far exceeded the tabernacle.
ten cubits the height] There was a plain ascent like an hill to go up and offer on this high altar. In this respect the priest is said to come down from the altar, Leviticus 9:22. By steps they might not go up to an altar, Exodus 20:26. unlesse that inhibition were temporary. See the notes on Exodus 20:26.

the similitude of oxen] These oxen were cast with the sea on the sides thereof: and were different from the twelve oxen on which it stood, v. 4. Either these are called knops (1 Kings 7:24.) or knops were joyned with them.
