Matthew 4

Christ having fasted fourty days in the wilderness, is tempted of the Devil, 1 Afterwards ministred unto by the Anggel, 11 Leaving Nazareth to preach, 17. Calleth Peter and Andrew, 18. James and John, who leaving all, follow him, 21. Walking through Galilee, he teacheth in the Synagogues, and healeth all manner of discases 23.

1. Then [presently after he was baptised. Mark 1:12.] was Jesus away of the spirit [or, of that spirit, that is, by tyhe moving of the Holy Ghost, which was descended upon him. See Luke 4:1.] into the wilderness, to be tempted of the Devil. [This wpord comes from the Greek word Diabolos, which is as much to say, a slanderer, and false accuser. sEE rEV 12.9,10.]

2. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights[This was a miraculas fast with out eating or drinking like as was also the fast of Moses, Exodus 34:28. and of Alias, 1 Kings 19:8. which therefore cannot be imitated by us, no more then the other miracles of Christ.] he was at the last an hungred.

3. And the Tempter [So the Devil is called, because he seeks to bring men to sin and apostate. See Gen 3.] being come unto him, said if thou be the son of God, [namely, as the fore – going voice in thy Baptism testified] say, that these stones become bread.

4. But he answer, said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but the very word [that is to say, by all things which it pleaseth God to give vertue unto, and to make use of the nourishment and strengthening of men.] that goes forth through the mouth of God

5. Then the Devil took him along towards the holy city,[That is, Jerusalem; which is so called, because there God hath planetd his worship and sanctuary.] and set him upon the panacle of the Temple. [Gr. Wing so an up – risisng border was named, which like a leaning or rail was made round about the covering of the Temple; to hinfder any one from falling of easily.See Deuteronomy 22:8.]

6. And said unto him, If thou be the son of God cast thy self down – wards; for it ios written, That he shall give his Angels charge concerning thee; and (that) they shall take thee upon their hands, [Here the Tempter leaves out the words, in all thy ways, see Psalms 91:11. and the annotation there.] that thou mayest at my time dash thy foot against a stone.

7. Jesus said unto him, it is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8. Again the Devill took him with him upon a very high mountain, and shewed him all the Kingdom of the world; and the glory of them. [Namely, either in some apparition, or else pointing at the several quarters of the same, and with words relating the glory thereof.]

9. And said unto him, All these things will give thee, if so be falling down, wilt worship me.

10. Then said Jesus unto him; get thee away, Satan , [that is to say, opposite, Adversary, or Enemy. So the Devil is called, because he is the enemy of mankind. see 1 Pet. 5. 8.] for it is written, The Lord thy God shalt thou worship, and serve him alone.

11. Then the Devil left him, and behold, the Angels [That is to say, Messenger. So the good Spirits are called, because they are sent forth by God to execute hhis commands. See Psalms 103:20. and Hebrews 1:14.] came, and served him.

12. Now when Jesus heard, that John was delivered over, [Namley, into prison. See Matth.14.] hhe returned towards Galilee.

13. And having left Nazareth, came dwell at Capernaum, lying upon the Sea; in the borders of Zabulon snd Nephtalim.

14. That thou might be fulfilled which is spoken by Esaias the Prophet , saying

15. The alnd of Zbulon, and the land of Naphtalim; [on the] way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, [otherwise, about, or by] Galilee of the Nations. [or, of the Gentiles; for the Greek word signifies both; and is likewise used of the Jewish Nation, Luke 7:5. And this part of Ggalilee is so called, either because it was very populous, Deuteronomy 33:23. or, because it bordered on the Confines of Tyre and Sodn, which were Gentile Cities.]

16. The people that set in darkness hath seen a great light, and those which sate in the land and shadow of death, at them a light is risen up.

17. From thenceforth Jesus began to say, Repent, for the Kingdom of the Heavens is come nigh.

18. And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, [This Sea was a great in – landish lake; for the Hebrew call all great gathering togethr of water, Seas. It is otherwise called also the sea of Gennesareth, and the Sea of Tiberias, because these places lay upon this Sea] saw two Brothren; [namely] Simon and Peter, and Andrew his Brother , casting the net [Gr. casting – net] into the sea: (for they were Fishers)

19. And he said unto them, follow after me, [Or Come hither after me, John 1:35. it is said, that they were come to Christ before Johns imprisonment; but that was as Disciples: but here they are called to be Apostoles.] and i will make you Fishers of men.

20. Then they straightway leaving the nets, followes after him.

21. And being one forward from thence, saw other two brethren, [namely] James the [son] of Zebedee, and John hhis brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, manding their nets, and be called them.

22. Then they straightway leaving their ship, and their father, followed after him.

23. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, [Thse were places or buildings, in which the Jews hheld their Assemblies in all Cities, and the Law of Moses was read and expounded on very Sabbath – day. See Acts 15:21.] and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every sickness, and evry pain [thhat is to say, all kind of the deseases, or infirmities, weakness,(seebleness) among the people.

24. And his same went out [from thence] into all Syria; and they brought unto him all that were ill – disposed, being taken with divers diseases and torments, [that is to say, suck kind of deseases put men to great pain, and as it were torture them] and possessed with the Devil, and those that were lunatick, [these seem to be those that have the falling sickness, as more plainly appears out of Matth 17. verse. 15] and those that had the palse, [or, lame, stricken] and bee healed the same.

25. And great companies followed after him [That is to say, heaps or multitudes of people] from Galilee,and [from] Decapolis, [it was a Countrey so called in Greek, because there lay ten Cities in it. See Pliny,lib. 5. cap. 18.] and [from] Jerusalem. and [from] Judea, and [from] beyond the Jordan.
