Psalms 89
BSA1 I will sing [joyfully, with music] of the loving devotion [mercies, kindness] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] forever; with my mouth [lips, voice] I will proclaim [declare, make known] Your faithfulness [trustworthiness, reliability] to all generations [from age to age, throughout history]. word study 2 For I have said, “Loving devotion [mercy, kindness] is built up forever [for all eternity, to the age]; in the heavens [the sky, the spiritual realm] You establish Your faithfulness [trustworthiness, firmness].” word study 3 You said, “I have made [formed, established] a covenant [agreement, promise] with My chosen one [selected, appointed], I have sworn [given a binding promise, vowed] to David My servant [faithful attendant]: word study 4 ‘I will establish [make firm, confirm] your offspring [seed, descendants] forever [to the age, for all time] and build up [set up, strengthen] your throne [kingdom, royal seat] for all generations [to generation and generation].’” Selah word study 5 The heavens [the visible sky and the spiritual realm] praise Your wonders [mighty and awe-inspiring works], O LORD [the supreme Sovereign]— Your faithfulness [steadfast loyalty and truth] as well— in the assembly [congregation, gathering] of the holy ones [saints, set apart ones]. word study 6 For who in the [heavenly realm] skies can compare [be likened, equaled] with the LORD [Yehovah]? Who among the [holy] heavenly beings [sons of the mighty, angels] is like [similar to, comparable with] the LORD? word study 7 In the council [assembly, gathering] of the holy ones [saints, angels], God [El, the powerful One] is greatly feared [to be revered, awesome], and awesome [very terrible, to be had in reverence] above all who surround [are about, are round about] Him. word study 8 O LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] God of Hosts [Almighty, Commander of heavenly armies], who is like You [a strong and mighty one]? O mighty [powerful, to be feared] LORD, Your faithfulness [trustworthiness, reliability] surrounds [encompasses, encircles] You. word study 9 You [as the supreme Ruler] rule [govern, have dominion over] the raging [turbulent, prideful] sea; when its waves [powerful billows] mount up [arise, lift up], You still [calm, quiet] them [bringing peace]. word study 10 You [as the all-powerful One] crushed Rahab [the sea-monster] like a carcass [as one that is slain, utterly defeated]; You scattered Your enemies [those who oppose Your will] with Your mighty [strong, powerful] arm. word study 11 The heavens [the visible sky and the spiritual realm] are Yours [as Creator and Owner], and also the earth [the land, the material world]. The earth [the world, the inhabited earth] and its fullness [all its abundance, everything in it] You founded [established, laid the foundation of]. word study 12 North [and the southern regions] and south [the entire earth, from one end to the other] You created [founded, established, brought into being]; Tabor [a mountain in Israel] and Hermon [a majestic mountain] shout for joy [rejoice, celebrate, sing] at Your name [Your character, reputation, divine identity]. word study 13 Mighty [powerful, strong] is Your arm; strong [having great power, ability] is Your hand [instrument of action]. Your right hand [the hand of blessing, authority] is exalted [lifted up, highly honored]. word study 14 Righteousness [moral integrity, justice] and justice [judgment, fairness] are the foundation [base, establishment] of Your throne; loving devotion [mercy, lovingkindness] and faithfulness [truth, trustworthiness] go before You [precede Your face, attend Your presence]. word study 15 Blessed [happy, fortunate] are those who know [are familiar with, have experienced] the joyful sound [shout of praise, triumphant cry], who walk [live, habitually conduct themselves], O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], in the light [radiance, presence] of Your presence [face, countenance]. word study 16 They rejoice [celebrate with joy, are glad] in Your name [Your character, reputation] all day long [throughout every day, continually], and in Your righteousness [justice, moral integrity] they exult [are exalted, lifted up, triumphant]. word study 17 For You [the supreme Lord] are the glory [beauty, splendor] of their strength [power, might], and by Your favor [good will, pleasure] our horn is exalted [lifted up, elevated]. word study 18 Surely our shield [defense, protector] belongs to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], and our king [ruler, sovereign] to the Holy One [set apart, sacred] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 19 You once spoke [in the past, previously] in a vision [a prophetic dream, a divine revelation]; to Your godly ones [holy ones, saints, set apart] You said, “I have bestowed [given, granted, laid] help [strength, protection, a shield] on a warrior [a mighty one, a strong soldier]; I have exalted [lifted up, elevated] one chosen [selected, appointed, anointed] from the people [the nation, Israel, God’s chosen]. word study 20 I have found [discovered, chosen] My servant [faithful one, attendant] David; with My sacred [holy, set apart] oil I have anointed [appointed, consecrated] him. word study 21 My hand [to steady and support] will sustain him; surely My arm [My powerful strength] will strengthen [make firm and confident] him. word study 22 No [deceitful, oppressive] enemy will exact [demand, oppress with] tribute [a tax, forced payment]; no [son of, characterized by] wicked [evil, unrighteous] man will oppress [afflict, trouble] him. word study 23 I will crush [beat down, wipe out] his foes [enemies, adversaries] before him and strike down [smite, afflict] those who hate [are against, oppose] him. word study 24 My faithfulness [trustworthiness, loyalty] and loving devotion [mercy, kindness] will be with him, and through My name [My authority, power] his horn [strength, victory] will be exalted [lifted up, victorious]. word study 25 I will set his hand [also, in addition] over the sea [the Mediterranean, the vast ocean], and his right hand upon the rivers [the flowing waters, the streams]. word study 26 He will call [cry out in prayer] to Me, ‘You are my Father [the One who gives life and guidance], my God [the all-powerful One], the Rock [a foundation of strength and stability] of my salvation [deliverance, rescue].’ word study 27 I will indeed appoint him as My firstborn [most high, supreme son], the highest [above all others] of the kings [rulers, leaders] of the earth [the world, all nations]. word study 28 I [the Lord] will forever preserve My loving devotion [mercy, kindness, covenant faithfulness] for him, and My covenant [agreement, promise, eternal pact] with him will stand fast [be steadfast, remain firm, never change]. word study 29 I will establish [make firm, confirm] his line [royal dynasty, descendants] forever [for all eternity, always], his throne [kingdom, reign] as long as [like the days of] the heavens [the sky, the celestial realm] endure [last, remain]. word study 30 If his sons [children, descendants, seed] forsake [abandon, give up] My law [ordinances, decisions, judgments] and do not walk [follow, obey] in My judgments [rules, decisions, ordinances], word study 31 if [they choose to disobey] they violate My statutes [break My decrees, disregard My requirements] and fail [do not keep, neglect] to keep My commandments [laws, instructions], word study 32 I will attend to [visit, punish, send punishment on] their transgression [sin, rebellion] with the rod [by beating them with a rod], and to their iniquity [evil-doing, wrongdoing] with stripes [strokes, lashes, a whip]. word study 33 But I will not withdraw [completely take away, utterly remove] My loving devotion [lovingkindness, mercy, faithfulness] from him, nor ever [at any time, under any circumstance] betray [be false to, deal falsely in] My faithfulness [promise, truth, reliability]. word study 34 I will not [under any circumstances, ever] violate [break or annul] My covenant [agreement, promise] or alter [change, profane] the utterance [thing that is gone out, word] of My lips [spoken promise, declaration]. word study 35 Once [for all time] and for all I have sworn [made a solemn promise, vowed] by My [own] holiness [set-apart nature, divine character]— I will not [under any circumstances, never] lie [deceive or fail] to David [as a covenant promise, in faithfulness]— word study 36 his offspring [seed, descendants, royal line] shall endure [last, continue, remain] forever [for all eternity, to the age], and his throne [kingdom, dynasty, seat of power] before Me [in My presence, as the sun shines] like the sun, word study 37 like the moon [a faithful witness], established [fixed, firmly set] forever [for all eternity, to the age], a faithful [trustworthy, reliable] witness [testifier, observer] in the sky [heaven, the celestial realm].” Selah word study 38 Now, however, You have [cast off and] spurned [rejected with disgust] and rejected [abandoned, put away] him; You are [very, exceedingly] enraged [wroth, deeply angry] by [with, against] Your anointed one [chosen king, the one set apart]. word study 39 You [the Lord, Divine King] have renounced [rejected, made void] the covenant [agreement, promise] with Your servant [anointed one] and sullied [profaned, cast to the ground] his crown [divine authority] in the dust [earth, humble state]. word study 40 You have broken down [torn down, reduced to rubble] all his walls [hedges, defensive barriers]; You have reduced [brought to ruin, laid in ruin] his strongholds [fortresses, fortified places] to rubble [ruin, destruction]. word study 41 All [every single one, everyone who passes] who pass by [on the way, along the path] plunder [rob, take away his goods, spoil] him; he has become [is regarded as, been made] a reproach [object of mockery, ridicule, shame] to his neighbors [nearby nations, those around him]. word study 42 You have exalted [enabled to defeat, given power to] the right hand of his foes [adversaries, enemies]; You have made [caused to be, brought about] all [every single one, everything] his enemies [those who oppose him, haters] rejoice [celebrate their victory, glad]. word study 43 You have bent [turned back, repelled] the edge of his sword [the sharpness of his weapon, his military strength] and have not sustained [supported, helped] him in battle [the fight, the war, his struggles]. word study 44 You have ended [caused to cease, made to stop] his splendor [glory, brightness, dignity] and cast [thrown down, levelled] his throne [seat of kingdom, royal power] to the ground [the earth, the land]. word study 45 You have cut short [ended abruptly, shortened] the days of his youth [early life, prime]; You have covered [overwhelmed, humiliated] him with shame [disgrace, humiliation]. Selah word study 46 How long, O LORD [the Supreme Ruler, Yehovah]? Will You hide Yourself [keep Yourself concealed, enwrap Yourself] forever [for all eternity, perpetually]? Will Your wrath [anger, fury, burning indignation] keep burning [continue to blaze, remain kindled] like fire [with intense passion, unrelenting fervor]? word study 47 Remember [consider, think about] the briefness [shortness, fleeting nature] of my lifespan [mortal life, earthly existence]! For what [why, to what end] futility [vanity, emptiness] You have created [formed, brought into being] all men [humanity, the children of men] [in vain, without purpose]! word study 48 What man [mortal, human being] can live [exist, have life] and never see [experience, encounter] death [the end of life, separation from God]? Can he [any person, an individual] deliver [rescue, save] his soul [his inner being, spirit] from the power [control, authority] of Sheol [the grave, the underworld, a place of darkness]? Selah [pause, reflect, consider] word study 49 Where, O Lord [the sovereign Master], is Your loving devotion [former lovingkindnesses, mercies] of old [from the past, in times gone by], which You faithfully [in Your faithfulness, truth] swore [promised, vowed] to David [the king, Your anointed one]? word study 50 Remember, O Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master], the reproach [shame, humiliation, or blasphemy] of Your servants [faithful followers, those who serve You], which I bear [endure, carry in my heart] in my heart [innermost being, deepest emotions] from so many people [nations, or all the mighty peoples]— word study 51 how Your enemies [those who oppose You] have taunted [reproached, scorned], O LORD [Adonay, Master], and have mocked [ridiculed, shamed] every step [footsteps, path] of Your anointed one [chosen king]! word study 52 Blessed [praised, extolled] be the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] forever [for evermore, to the age]! Amen [so be it, may it be so] and amen [a confirmation, a strong affirmation]. word study
