1 I will give thanks [praise, acknowledge] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] with all my heart [whole being, innermost self]; I will recount [tell, show forth] all Your wonders [marvelous works, amazing things]. word study 2 I will be glad [rejoice and exult] and rejoice [have delight] in You [the Lord]; I will sing praise [make a song of praise] to Your name [Your wonderful nature], O Most High [the supreme God, above all others]. word study 3 When my enemies [those who hate me, adversaries] retreat [turn back, are turned back], they stumble [fall, are broken] and perish [fall and perish, are killed] before You [at Your presence, in Your sight]. word study 4 For You have upheld [maintained, supported] my just [righteous, fair] cause [right, legal claim]; You sit [are seated, reside] on Your throne [high place, seat of judgment] judging [ruling, deciding] righteously [with justice, in righteousness]. word study 5 You have rebuked [condemned, reproved] the nations; You have destroyed [blotted out, wiped out] the wicked; You have erased [put out, blotted out] their name [reputation, memory] forever and ever [to the age, eternally]. word study 6 The enemy [O thou enemy, the wicked one] has come to eternal [perpetual, forever] ruin, and You have uprooted [destroyed, overthrown] their cities; the very memory [remembrance, memorial] of them has vanished [perished, been blotted out]. word study 7 But the LORD [Yehovah] abides [sits as King, remains forever] forever; He has established [prepared, set up] His throne [seat of judgment, royal authority] for judgment [to judge, administer justice]. word study 8 He [the Lord, Yehovah] judges [ministers judgment, administers] the world [nations, peoples] with justice [righteousness, uprightness]; He governs [judges, ministers to] the people [nations, peoples] with equity [fairness, true decisions]. word study 9 The LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] is a refuge [a high tower, a stronghold] for the oppressed [those who are crushed down, the poor], a stronghold [a fortress, a place of safety] in times [seasons, periods] of trouble [adversity, affliction]. word study 10 Those who know [have an intimate understanding of] Your name [Yehovah] trust [put their faith and confidence] in You, for You, O LORD [the sovereign God], have not forsaken [abandoned or left helpless] those who seek [come to, or inquire of] You. word study 11 Sing praises [hymns of adoration, songs of worship] to the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel], who dwells [resides, has His throne] in Zion [the city of God, the holy hill]; proclaim [declare, make known] His deeds [works, mighty acts] among the nations [the Gentiles, all peoples]. word study 12 For the Avenger [Judge, One who seeks justice] of bloodshed [violence, shedding of innocent blood] remembers [keeps in mind, does not forget]; He does not ignore [forget, turn a deaf ear to] the cry [plea, lamentation] of the afflicted [humble, poor, oppressed]. word study 13 Be merciful [have mercy, show compassion] to me, O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]; see [consider, behold] how my enemies [those who hate me] afflict [trouble, persecute] me! Lift [grab, rescue] me up from the gates [doors, entrance] of death [the realm of the dead, spiritual darkness], word study 14 that I may declare [show forth, make known] all Your praises [worship, adoration]— that within the gates [city entrances, places of gathering] of Daughter Zion [the people of God, Jerusalem] I may rejoice [be glad, celebrate] in Your salvation [rescue, deliverance]. word study 15 The nations [heathen, pagan peoples] have fallen into a pit [a hole, a trap] of their making [that they dug, their own creation]; their feet [their own steps, their actions] are caught in the net [a snare, a hidden trap] they have hidden [secretly set, concealed]. word study 16 The LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] is known by the justice [fairness, righteousness] He brings; the wicked [evil-doers, those who oppose God] are ensnared [captured, trapped] by the work [actions, deeds] of their hands [their own efforts, a meditation]. Higgaion Selah [a pause, a moment for reflection] word study 17 The [morally wrong, guilty of sin] wicked will return [be turned back, depart] to Sheol [the underworld, the grave]— all the nations [who turn their backs, forget] who forget God [Elohim, the supreme God]. word study 18 For the needy [poor, afflicted] will not always be forgotten [ignored, overlooked]; nor the hope [expectation, confidence] of the oppressed [those who suffer, humble] forever [for all eternity, lost to the age] dashed [perish, crushed]. word study 19 Rise up [arise, stand up], O LORD [Yehovah], do not let man [human beings, mortal men] prevail [be strong, win]; let the nations [heathen, Gentile peoples] be judged [evaluated, brought to justice] in Your presence [sight, before Your face]. word study 20 Lay terror [put them in fear, appoint a director to them] upon them, O LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God]; let the nations [Gentiles, heathen] know they are but [merely, only] men [human, Enosh, mortal].
