Context — The Birth of Samuel
22but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
23“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD confirm His word.” So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24Once she had weaned him, Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.Cross References

1 Samuel 1:22 Summary
[Hannah did not go with her husband to make the annual sacrifice to the Lord because she had promised to dedicate her son Samuel to the Lord's service after he was weaned. She wanted to fulfill this vow and trust the Lord with Samuel's life, just as we are encouraged to trust Him with our lives in Proverbs 3:5-6. This shows us the importance of keeping our promises to the Lord and trusting in His plan for our lives, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11. By dedicating Samuel to the Lord, Hannah was surrendering her own desires and plans for her son's life and instead choosing to follow the Lord's will for him.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Hannah not go with her husband Elkanah to make the annual sacrifice to the Lord?
Hannah stayed behind because she had promised to dedicate her son Samuel to the Lord's service after he was weaned, as seen in 1 Samuel 1:22, and she wanted to fulfill this vow as stated in Deuteronomy 12:11.
What does it mean for Samuel to 'appear before the Lord and to stay there permanently'?
This means that Hannah intended to dedicate Samuel to a life of service to the Lord, similar to a Nazirite vow as described in Numbers 6:1-21, where he would live and serve at the house of the Lord in Shiloh under the care of Eli the priest.
How long did Hannah plan to wait before taking Samuel to the house of the Lord?
Hannah planned to wait until Samuel was weaned, which typically occurred around three years of age in ancient Israelite culture, before taking him to the house of the Lord to fulfill her vow as mentioned in 1 Samuel 1:22 and 1 Samuel 1:24.
What was the significance of Hannah's decision to dedicate Samuel to the Lord's service?
Hannah's decision reflects her deep gratitude to the Lord for answering her prayer for a child, as seen in 1 Samuel 1:27, and demonstrates her trust in the Lord's plan for Samuel's life, setting an example of faith and surrender as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6.
