2 Chronicles 11:2 Summary
[This verse tells us that God spoke to a man named Shemaiah, who was a prophet, or messenger of God, and told him to give a message to Rehoboam, the king of Judah, as seen in 2 Chronicles 11:2. This is similar to how God spoke to other prophets like Moses in Exodus 3:4-10 or Isaiah in Isaiah 6:1-5. God's message was clear: He did not want Rehoboam to go to war against the Israelites, and Rehoboam listened to the Lord's words and obeyed, as we see in 2 Chronicles 11:4. This shows us that God is always speaking to us, and we need to be listening for His voice, as encouraged in Psalm 119:105 or Proverbs 3:5-6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Shemaiah the man of God?
Shemaiah is only mentioned in this context in 2 Chronicles 11:2 and 12:5-8, but it is clear that he was a prophet of the Lord, as he received the word of the LORD and was able to speak it to Rehoboam, similar to other prophets like Isaiah in Isaiah 1:1 or Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:4-5
What does it mean that the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah?
This phrase indicates that Shemaiah received a direct revelation from God, similar to what is described in Ezekiel 1:3 or 1 Samuel 15:10, and was commissioned to speak it to others, in this case, to Rehoboam
Why did God choose to speak through Shemaiah instead of directly to Rehoboam?
The Bible does not give a specific reason why God chose to speak through Shemaiah, but it is clear that God often uses prophets and other messengers to communicate with His people, as seen in Deuteronomy 18:15 or 1 Corinthians 12:28-29
How did Shemaiah know that the word he received was from the LORD?
The Bible does not provide specific details on how Shemaiah knew the word was from the LORD, but it is likely that he recognized the voice of God through the Holy Spirit, similar to what is described in 1 Kings 19:11-13 or Acts 13:2-4
