| 4 | 2 Chronicles 26:16–21 | But when Uzziah grew powerful, his arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. Then Azariah the priest, along with eighty brave priests of the LORD, went in after him. They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.” Uzziah, with a censer in his hand to offer incense, was enraged. But while he raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense, leprosy broke out on his forehead. When Azariah the chief priest and all the priests turned to him and saw his leprous forehead, they rushed him out. Indeed, he himself hurried to get out, because the LORD had afflicted him. So King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He lived in isolation, leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace to govern the people of the land. |

2 Chronicles 27:2 Summary
This verse tells us that Jotham, a king of Judah, did what was right in God's eyes, just like his father before him. Even though Jotham was a good king, the people he ruled over were still corrupt and did not follow God. This shows us that just because someone in a position of authority is doing what is right, it doesn't mean that everyone else will follow their example (as seen in Isaiah 1:4). We can learn from Jotham's example by trying to do what is right, even if those around us are not, and by respecting the boundaries that God has set in our lives (as encouraged in Romans 12:2).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that Jotham did what was right in the eyes of the LORD?
This means that Jotham obeyed God's commands and lived according to His will, just as his father Uzziah had done, as seen in 2 Chronicles 26:4-5, where it says Uzziah did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
Why did Jotham not enter the temple of the LORD?
The Bible does not give a specific reason why Jotham did not enter the temple, but it may be related to the fact that only the priests were allowed to enter the temple, as stated in Numbers 18:7, and Jotham, as a king, may have been respecting this boundary.
What is the significance of the people still behaving corruptly?
Despite Jotham's righteous actions, the people's corruption shows that a leader's actions do not always determine the behavior of their followers, as seen in Isaiah 1:4, where the people of Judah are described as corrupt despite having a righteous king.
How can we apply Jotham's example to our own lives?
We can learn from Jotham's example by striving to do what is right in God's eyes, even if those around us are not following God's ways, as encouraged in Romans 12:2, where we are told to not conform to the pattern of this world.
