Exodus 34:5 Summary

In Exodus 34:5, the Lord comes down in a cloud to be with Moses, showing us that God wants to be close to His people. When the Lord proclaims His name, He is telling us who He is and what He is like, which is compassionate, gracious, and faithful, as seen in Exodus 34:6-7. This reminds us of other times in the Bible when God appeared in a cloud, like in Exodus 19:9 and Exodus 24:15-17, demonstrating His consistent love and care for us. Just like Moses, we can experience God's presence and hear His voice when we take time to meet with Him, as described in Psalm 46:10 and Matthew 11:28.

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 34:5

MOSES ALLOWED TO SEE GOD’S GLORY.(5-8) The present ascent of Moses to the top of Sinai had two objects:—(1) The repair of the loss occasioned by his breaking the first tables; and (2) the accomplishment of the promise made to him that (under certain restrictions) he should “see God’s glory.” Combined with this promise were two minor ones—that God would make His “goodness” pass before him, and that He would reveal to him afresh His name. The revelation of the name is recorded in Exodus 34:6-7, the manifestation of the glory in Exodus 34:5. How Moses was enabled to see God’s goodness pass before him is not stated. (Comp. Note on Exodus 33:19.)
