Ezekiel 23:3 Summary

Ezekiel 23:3 describes how two sisters, representing the nations of Israel and Judah, became corrupted from a young age by idolatrous and immoral practices. This corruption is compared to the way a young woman's purity and innocence can be lost. The Bible warns us against allowing the world to shape our values and morals, as seen in Romans 12:2 and 1 John 2:15-17. By staying close to God and following His teachings, we can remain pure and devoted to Him, just like a bride is devoted to her husband, as seen in Ephesians 5:25-33.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for the sisters to have 'played in Egypt' in Ezekiel 23:3?

This phrase suggests that from a young age, the sisters were involved in idolatrous and immoral practices, similar to those found in Egypt, as warned against in Exodus 23:33 and Deuteronomy 7:3-4.

How does the image of 'their breasts being fondled' relate to the spiritual condition of the sisters?

This image is a metaphor for the way the sisters allowed foreign influences to shape their spiritual lives, much like the way Hosea 2:13 describes how God's people were seduced by idols.

What is the significance of 'their virgin bosoms caressed' in this context?

This phrase highlights the corruption of innocence and purity, as seen in the way God originally intended for His people to remain pure and devoted to Him, as in 2 Corinthians 11:2-3.

How does this verse relate to the overall message of Ezekiel?

Ezekiel 23:3 sets the stage for the prophet's condemnation of Israel's and Judah's spiritual adultery, as seen in the rest of the chapter, and serves as a reminder of God's call to faithfulness and purity, as in Ezekiel 18:30-32.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways in which I may be 'playing in Egypt' or compromising my spiritual purity in my own life?
  2. How can I guard my heart against the corrupting influences of the world, as described in 1 John 2:15-17?
  3. What does it mean for me to remain 'pure and devoted' to God, as seen in 2 Corinthians 11:2-3, and how can I cultivate this in my life?
  4. In what ways can I seek to 'return to my first love' and rekindle my devotion to God, as encouraged in Revelation 2:4-5?

Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 23:3

And they committed whoredoms in Egypt,.... When they were but one body, one nation; and while they sojourned as strangers in that land they learned and practised the idolatries of it, Joshua 24:14,

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Ezekiel 23:3

And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity. They committed whoredoms in Egypt.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Ezekiel 23:3

They committed whoredoms in Egypt; when they came down into Egypt, and sojourned there: possibly they might commit bodily whoredoms, but spiritual whoredoms, i.e. idolatry, they did certainly commit, as appears ,8, which see; in a low condition, by converse with the idolatrous Egyptians they fell in with their idolatry. In their youth; early; though it is no where said when they began, yet by this it appears that it was not long after their coming down into Egypt. There were their breasts pressed: this and what follows is an allusion, which illustrates what was before spoken; while they were constant to God and his worship, they were as beautiful, chaste, and lovely virgins; when seduced to idolatry, they became as loathsome harlots or strumpets.

Trapp's Commentary on Ezekiel 23:3

Ezekiel 23:3 And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.Ver. 3. And they committed whoredoms in Egypt.] See Ezekiel 20:8 Joshua 24:14. There were their breasts pressed.] Violatam virginitatem mammarum laxitas consequitur. Petron. Satyricon.

Ellicott's Commentary on Ezekiel 23:3

(3) In Egypt.—The idolatries of Israel in Egypt have already been spoken of in the Note to Ezekiel 20:8. (See also Ezekiel 23:19 below.)

Cambridge Bible on Ezekiel 23:3

3. The two kingdoms are represented ideally as already existing in Egypt. This is not so far from the truth. The great tribes of Judah and Ephraim from the first stood apart, and in their attitude there lay already the germs of the two kingdoms, as appears in the song of Deborah. On the idea of the prophet that idolatry was practised in Egypt, cf. ch. Ezekiel 20:8, Ezekiel 16:26.

Whedon's Commentary on Ezekiel 23:3

3. They committed whoredoms in Egypt — It is plain from this that Ezekiel knew that Israel had broken faith with the one God in Goshen.
