12I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among desolate lands, and her cities will lie desolate for forty years among the ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the countries.
13For this is what the Lord GOD says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations to which they were scattered. 14I will restore Egypt from captivity and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin. There they will be a lowly kingdom.Cross References

As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and does not place its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation by sword and famine and plague, declares the LORD, until I have destroyed it by his hand. But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave in its own land, to cultivate it and reside in it, declares the LORD.” |
Ezekiel 29:12 Summary
[Ezekiel 29:12 tells us that God will make the land of Egypt a desolation, with its cities lying empty for 40 years, as a judgment for their sins. This is similar to the judgment on other nations in the Bible, such as Babylon in Isaiah 13:19-22. God will also scatter the Egyptians among other nations, but He promises to restore them later, as seen in Ezekiel 29:14. This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over all nations and kingdoms, and that He will judge sin and rebellion, but also offer restoration and mercy to those who repent, as seen in (Isaiah 55:7) and (1 John 1:9).]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does God promise to make the land of Egypt a desolation in Ezekiel 29:12?
God promises to make the land of Egypt a desolation as a judgment for their sins, as seen in Ezekiel 29:10, where He says He is against Egypt and will turn it into a ruin, similar to the judgment on Babylon in Isaiah 13:19-22.
What is the significance of the 40-year period of desolation in Ezekiel 29:12?
The 40-year period of desolation is a time of judgment and purification for Egypt, similar to the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness in Numbers 14:33-34, and it will end with God gathering the Egyptians from the nations to which they were scattered, as promised in Ezekiel 29:13.
Will Egypt ever be restored after this period of desolation?
Yes, according to Ezekiel 29:14, God will restore Egypt from captivity and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, where they will be a lowly kingdom, similar to the restoration of Israel in Ezekiel 37:21-22.
What does it mean for the Egyptians to be dispersed among the nations and scattered throughout the countries in Ezekiel 29:12?
This means that the Egyptians will be forced to leave their homeland and live among other nations, similar to the dispersion of the Israelites in Deuteronomy 28:64, and it will be a time of hardship and struggle for them, but also an opportunity for them to hear the gospel and turn to God, as seen in Acts 2:10.
