Whoever touches any furniture on which she was sitting must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. And whether it is a bed or furniture on which she was sitting, whoever touches it will be unclean until evening. If a man lies with her and her menstrual flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days, and any bed on which he lies will become unclean. When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days at a time other than her menstrual period, or if it continues beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, just as she is during the days of her menstruation. Any bed on which she lies or any furniture on which she sits during the days of her discharge will be unclean, like her bed during her menstrual period. Anyone who touches these things will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. When a woman is cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean. On the eighth day she is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. The priest is to sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her before the LORD for her unclean discharge. You must keep the children of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling My tabernacle, which is among them. This is the law of him who has a discharge, of the man who has an emission of semen whereby he is unclean, of a woman in her menstrual period, of any male or female who has a discharge, and of a man who lies with an unclean woman.’” |

Ezekiel 36:17 Summary
[This verse tells us that the Israelites made their land unclean by the way they lived and the choices they made, which is compared to something very unclean and unwanted, like the impurity of a woman's menstrual period, as mentioned in Leviticus 15:19-24. This shows just how serious and offensive their sin was to God. The Israelites' actions had real consequences, just like our actions do today, as seen in Galatians 6:7-8, where it is written that we reap what we sow. By looking at their example, we can learn the importance of living in a way that honors God and keeps our own 'land' - our hearts and lives - clean and pure, with the help of Jesus Christ, as described in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for the Israelites to have 'defiled' the land?
To defile the land means to make it unclean or polluted, often through sinful actions or idolatrous practices, as seen in Ezekiel 36:17 and also in Leviticus 18:24-25, where it is written that the land can be defiled by the actions of its inhabitants.
How does the 'uncleanness of a woman's impurity' relate to the Israelites' behavior?
The 'uncleanness of a woman's impurity' is a reference to the ceremonial uncleanness associated with a woman's menstrual period, as described in Leviticus 15:19-24, and is used here to illustrate the extreme nature of the Israelites' sin before God, emphasizing its offensive and defiling character.
What is the significance of God addressing Ezekiel as 'Son of man'?
God addressing Ezekiel as 'Son of man' is a way of emphasizing Ezekiel's humanity and his role as a messenger of God to the people, as seen in Ezekiel 2:1 and other places in the book, highlighting the divine authority behind the message he is to deliver.
How does this verse fit into the broader context of Ezekiel's prophecy?
This verse is part of a larger section where God is explaining to Ezekiel why He had to judge the Israelites and remove them from the land, as seen in Ezekiel 36:16-19, and is setting the stage for the promise of restoration that follows in Ezekiel 36:22-32.
