Context — The Sin of Achan
24Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the cloak, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his oxen and donkeys and sheep, his tent, and everything else he owned, and brought them to the Valley of Achor.
25“Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua. “Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!” And all Israel stoned him to death. Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies. 26And they heaped over Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Achor to this day.Cross References

Joshua 7:24 Summary
This verse, Joshua 7:24, shows how Joshua and the Israelites dealt with Achan's sin by taking him and his belongings to the Valley of Achor for judgment. This event teaches us that sin has serious consequences, as seen in the punishment of Achan and his family, and emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's commands (as seen in Deuteronomy 28:1-2). By looking at this verse, we can learn to take sin seriously and seek to follow God's commands in our own lives, just like Joshua did in Joshua 1:7-8. We should also remember that God is a God of mercy and forgiveness, as seen in Psalm 51:1-2, and that we can always come to Him for forgiveness and restoration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Joshua take Achan's entire family and possessions to the Valley of Achor?
This was a consequence of Achan's disobedience, as outlined in Deuteronomy 24:16, which states that each person shall be put to death for their own sin, but in this case, it seems the family was involved or aware of Achan's actions, thus incurring the same judgment, as seen in Joshua 7:24 and supported by the principle in Exodus 20:5.
What is the significance of the Valley of Achor?
The Valley of Achor, as mentioned in Joshua 7:24 and 7:26, is a place of judgment and atonement, where the sin of Achan was dealt with, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God's commands, as emphasized in Deuteronomy 28:1-2 and Joshua 1:7-8.
How does this event relate to the concept of sin and its consequences?
This event highlights the seriousness of sin and its consequences, as seen in Joshua 7:24, and illustrates the principle that sin can have far-reaching effects, not only on the individual but also on their family and community, as warned in Genesis 3:6-7 and Numbers 32:23.
What can we learn from Achan's mistake?
Achan's mistake teaches us about the dangers of disobedience and the importance of faithfulness to God's commands, as emphasized in Joshua 1:7-8 and Proverbs 28:13, and serves as a reminder to confess and repent of our sins, as encouraged in 1 John 1:9 and Psalm 51:1-2.
