Proverbs 6:15 Summary

This verse is saying that when someone consistently does wrong and deceives others, God will suddenly bring judgment upon them, and it will be too late for them to recover. This is a serious warning to turn away from sin and follow God's path of righteousness, as we see in Proverbs 10:9 and Matthew 5:8. We must be careful not to deceive ourselves or others, and instead choose to follow God's ways, which are described in Psalms 119:105 as a lamp to our feet. By doing so, we can avoid the kind of calamity described in this verse and live a life that is pleasing to God.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of calamity is being referred to in Proverbs 6:15?

The calamity in Proverbs 6:15 is a sudden and severe judgment from God, similar to what is described in Psalms 73:18-19, where the wicked are suddenly destroyed.

Can someone who has been shattered beyond recovery be restored?

According to Proverbs 6:15, the calamity will leave the person shattered beyond recovery, emphasizing the finality of God's judgment, as also seen in Proverbs 29:1, where a person who hardens their neck will be destroyed suddenly.

Is this verse only talking about non-believers or can it apply to believers as well?

While the context of Proverbs 6:13-15 seems to describe a wicked person, the principle of God's judgment can apply to anyone who persists in sin, as warned in Hebrews 10:26-27, where believers who deliberately keep on sinning will face God's judgment.

How can we avoid the kind of calamity described in Proverbs 6:15?

To avoid God's judgment, we must turn away from deceit and evil, as commanded in Proverbs 4:24-27, and instead choose the path of righteousness, as encouraged in Proverbs 10:9 and Matthew 5:8.

Gill's Exposition on Proverbs 6:15

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly,.... Unthought of and unexpected: he that deviseth mischief to others secretly shall have no warning of his own ruin, nor time and means of preventing it;

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Proverbs 6:15

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Proverbs 6:15

Trapp's Commentary on Proverbs 6:15

Proverbs 6:15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.Ver. 15. Suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.] A dismal doom: broken, and not bruised only; "suddenly" broken, when they least dream or dread the danger. And this "without remedy"; no possibility of piecing them up again, or putting them into a better condition. See this exemplified in Nabal, and Doeg.

Ellicott's Commentary on Proverbs 6:15

(15) Suddenly shall he be broken.—Shattered as a potter’s vessel (Isaiah 30:14), without hope of recovery. This character of a malicious mischief-maker would seem to be especially hateful to God; it is described in like terms in Psalms 64 and a similar fate foretold of it; in Proverbs 6:19 also it is held up as the very worst of the seven detestable things there mentioned.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Proverbs 6:15

Verse 15. Suddenly shall he be broken] Probably alluding to some punishment of the adulterer, such as being stoned to death. A multitude shall join together, and so overwhelm him with stones, that he shall have his flesh and bones broken to pieces, and there shall be no remedy-none to deliver or pity him.

Cambridge Bible on Proverbs 6:15

Thirteenth Address. Chap. 6. Proverbs 6:12-19. The Worthless PersonThis short section might seem at first sight to break itself into two (Proverbs 6:12-19). But the note of character, “he soweth discord,” repeated in Proverbs 6:19 from Proverbs 6:14, helps to identify the worthless person as being the subject throughout, and a closer examination exhibits the connection. Would you recognise the worthless man? Here is his description, Proverbs 6:12-14. Would you understand his end? Here is his destiny, Proverbs 6:15. Would you know what God, the Judge of all, sees in him to hate and punish? Here are the six, yea seven things that undo him, Proverbs 6:16-19. The connection is well worked out by Mr Horton, The Book of Proverbs, pp. 84–91.

Barnes' Notes on Proverbs 6:15

The duper and the dupe shall share the same calamity.

Whedon's Commentary on Proverbs 6:15

15. Broken — Shivered, dashed to pieces. This verse expresses more forcibly and in a clearer manner the idea of Pro 6:11. Comp. Proverbs 29:1; Isaiah 1:28; Isaiah 30:14; Jeremiah 19:11; Job 40:11.
