The Key Word מְרָרִ֛י, me.ra.Rigenerated

The name מְרָרִ֛י (Merari) refers to a prominent figure in the Levitical lineage, specifically the third son of Levi. His name means 'bitter,' reflecting perhaps the challenges faced by his descendants. The parsing indicates that this is a proper noun, specifically identifying a family line.

Merari is significant as he heads a family of Levites, which plays a crucial role in the service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. This highlights the importance of familial lineage in the religious and social structure of ancient Israel.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The main clause is governed by the phrase וּבְנֵ֧י מְרָרִ֛י, and the descendants of Merari, establishing the subject of the verse. The structure lists the kinsmen and their lineage, indicating relationships through a series of noun phrases.

The Hebrew word order places emphasis on the familial connections, starting with the kinsmen on the left, which may suggest a physical arrangement or a symbolic representation of their roles.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates מְרָרִ֛י as Μαραρί (Marari), maintaining the name's identity. This consistency indicates the importance of the family line across both Hebrew and Greek texts.

The choice of words in the Septuagint may reflect a broader interpretation of the roles of the Levites and their significance in the worship practices of the time.

The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran

The Masoretic Text lists Ethan the son of Kishi as part of the sons of Merari, along with his lineage. The Septuagint, however, does not provide a direct equivalent for this verse, as it lacks a complete translation of the corresponding Hebrew text. Therefore, while the Masoretic Text presents a clear genealogy, the Septuagint does not offer sufficient detail to confirm or differ from the Hebrew account.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

ab'-di (`abhdi, probably by abbreviation "servant of Yahweh"):

(1) A Levite, father of Kishi and grandfather of King David's singer Ethan (1Ch 6:44; compare 1Ch 15:17). This makes Abdi a contemporary of Saul the king.

(2) A Levite, father of the Kish who was in service at the beginning of the reign of Hezekiah (2Ch 29:12). Some mistakenly identify this Abdi with the former.

(3) A man who in Ezra's time had married a foreign wife (Ezr 10:26). Not a Levite, but "of the sons of Elam."

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms.
