LEst he tear my soul like a lion] He desireth God to deliver him from the rage of cruell Saul, his principall adversary.
none to deliver] Heb. not a deliverer.
Psalms 7:3
if I have done this] Wherewith Cush chargeth me, to wit, if I have sought to slay Saul, and seduce the people.
if there be iniquity in my hands] That is, in me. But he names hands, because they are the instruments of murder.
Psalms 7:4
If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with
me] If I reverenced not Saul as Gods Anointed, and preserved his life, 1 Samuel 26:8-9.
Psalms 7:5
and lay mine honour in the dust] Let me not onely die, but be dishonoured for ever.
dust] Job 16:15.
Psalms 7:6
lift up thy self] Set thy self on thy Judgement-fear. Tribunalls were high, 1 Kings 10:19.
rage] Or, outrages.
to the judgement that thou hast commanded] To give me the kingdom promised: or, to right me of these false accusers.
Psalms 7:7
the congregation of the people compasse thee about] Psalms 5:11. and Psalms 142:7.
for their sakes] Not onely for mine, but for thy Churches sake also, declare thy power.
return thou on high] Come down first to search out the cause, as Genesis 18:21. and then return to thy throne to judge it.
Psalms 7:8
me] Or, for me, as Psalms 43:1.
according to my righteousnesse] Psalms 18:20. As touching my behaviour toward Saul, and mine enemies.
Psalms 7:9
Oh let the wickednesse of the wicked come to an end] Whereby they seek to undo me, and other good men.
for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins] 1 Samuel 16:7. 1 Chronicles 28:9. Psalms 139:1. Jeremiah 11:20. and Jeremiah 17:10. and Jeremiah 20:12.
the righteous God trieth] As gold is tried in the fire, Isaiah 48:10. Psalms 66:10. Job 23:10.
the hearts and reins] The thoughts and affections. God knows my innocency, and my accusers hypocrisie.
Psalms 7:10
My defence is of God] Heb. My buckler is upon God, or with God.
Psalms 7:11
God judgeth the righteous] Or, God is a righteous judge, or, God judgeth for the righteous.
every day] He doth continually call the wicked to repentance by some judgement or other.
Psalms 7:12
If he turn not] The wicked man, v. 9. or, mine enemy, v. 4, 13.
he will whet his sword] God will plague him.
whet his sword] Deuteronomy 32:41-42.
Psalms 7:14
Behold, he travelleth with iniquity, &c.] Job 15:35. Isaiah 59:4. James 1. 15.
Psalms 7:15
He made a pit and digged it] Heb. He hath digged a pit.
and is fallen into the ditch which he made] Psalms 9:15. and Psalms 10:2. Proverbs 5:22. Esther 7:10.
Psalms 7:16
his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate] From heaven shall he be punished by God for his cruelty, Romans 1:18.
Psalms 7:17
according to his righteousnesse] In keeping faithfully his promise with me, and rewarding mine enemy according to his violence against me.
