Matthew 24

Garner-Howes

Matthew 24:1

JESUS IN THE TEMPLE AREA V. 1,2

  1. “And Jesus went out,” (kai ekselthon ho lesous) “And Jesus (upon) going out,” because He chose to do so, abandoning the temple and temple-custodian-people to judgment that was to befall them physically, Matthew 11:21-22; Mark 13:1.
  2. “And departed from the temple:” (apo tou hierou eporeueto) “And went away from the temple, departed,” where He had been preaching and teaching for several hours, Matthew 21:23. The idea is He was going away to return no more to that polluted temple where form was worshipped rather than spirit, John 4:24.
  3. “And his disciples came to him,” (kai proselthon hoi mathetai autou) “And his disciples approached him,” Mark 13:1. They gravitated to Him, to whom they had grown so close since their beginning in Galilee more than three years before, Matthew 4:13-22.
  4. “For to show him the buildings of the temple.” (epideiksai auto tas oikodomes tou hierou) “To show to him the buildings of the temple proper,” which Herod had built, how they were adorned, decorated, architecturally designed, then put together, Luke 21:5; John 2:19-20. This they seemed to do to change the gloomy mood that followed His lament over Jerusalem. This verse begins the apocalyptic (unveiling or revealing) discourse of Jesus regarding:
  5. The destruction of Jerusalem.
  6. The coming of the Son of man.
  7. The end of the Gentile or church age. And numerous events associated or connected with each of the three predominant events, as also recounted, Mark 13:1; Luke 21:5.

Matthew 24:2

  1. “And Jesus said unto them,” (ho de apokritheis eipen autois) “Then he replying or responding said to them,” in a continuing serious, heavy, instructive mood, while walking with them for the last time in the temple area.
  2. “See ye not all these things?” (ou blepete tauta panta) “You all see all these things don’t you?” which they did. Literally He said, “Would you all (as disciples, learners) take a good look at all these things yourselves?” Let me reveal something to you about them and their future decay.
  3. “Verily I say unto you” (amen lego humin) “Truly I disclose to you all,” to my chosen disciples, the church which He had called and chosen and taught and later commissioned to the Gentiles, John 15:16; John 15:27; John 20:21.
  4. “There shall not be left here one stone upon another,” (ou me aphethe hode lithos epi lithon) “There shall not be left here at all one stone upon another stone,” a destruction that was to come by fire is alluded to by the Gk. term “aphethe,” a colorful term. Micah 3:12; Jeremiah 26:18.
  5. “That shall not be thrown down.” (hos ou kataluthesetai) “Which shall not be overthrown,” or turned upside down, to create an upheaval in this place, a predeclaration of coming destruction for both the temple buildings and Jerusalem, 1 Kings 9:7-9; Psalms 79:1; Isaiah 64:11; Luke 19:44.

Matthew 24:3

JESUS THREE-FOLD OF THE V. 1-3

  1. “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives,” (kathemenou de autou epi tou orous ton elaion) “And while he was sitting upon the mount of olives,” East of Jerusalem and the temple area, across the brook Kedron, after He had walked Through the temple area for His last time, before its destruction, sitting there in meditation, Mark 13:3.
  2. “The disciples came unto him privately, saying,” (proselthon auto hoi mathetai kat’ idian legontes) “The disciples of his church company approached him privately, saying,” requesting of Him confidential information about the temple destruction and themselves, and what was to happen to their Jewish people, unto the end of time.
  3. “Tell us, when shall these things be?” (eipe humin pote tauta estin) “Tell us when these things will be,” exist or come to be. Mark 13:3 indicates that the questions were privately posed for explanations by Peter, James, Joh and Andrew, in the presence, and for the benefit of all present, Luke 17:20-37; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5.
  4. “And what shall be the sign of thy coming,” (kai ti to semeion tes ses parousias) “And what will be the sign of your (body) presence,” so that we may recognize you? Matthew 24:30; Luke 21:7. Skeptics will cynically ask similar questions as His return draws nearer, 2 Peter 3:4.
  5. “And of the end of the world?” (kai sunteleias tou aionas) “And of the completion or consummation of the age?” True disciples still cry out, “tell us,” of His coming and events and conditions that prophetically are disclosed about it, and the end of the age, Mark 13:4. Let it be observed that this entire Olivet discourse of Mat 24:1 to Matthew 25:46 were addressed to our Lord’s disciples (His church company) called repeatedly by Matthew, the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 24:4

  1. “And Jesus answered and said unto them,” (kai apokritheis ho lesous eipen autois) “And replying Jesus said to them,” to His disciples directly, privately, and exclusively, to His church company people not to the whole world, or not to the sum total of believers, as taught by protestantism, as they also do the sermon on the mount.
  2. “Take heed that no man deceive you.” (blepete me tis humas planese) “Be careful or cautious lest anyone should cause you all to err,” Luke 21:8; Ephesians 5:6; 1 John 4:1, delude or deceive you all in this matter, Mark 13:5; 2 Thessalonians 1:1-3. One must recognize, at this point, that when those baptized obedient disciples of Jesus were addressed privately, they were addressed restrictedly as His church, both in the sermon on the mount and in this address.

Matthew 24:5

  1. “For many shall come in my name, saying,” (polloe gar eleusontai epi to onomati mou legontes) “Because many will come (trying to build) upon my name, repeatedly saying,” posing themselves to be the Messiah, Matthew 24:24; John 5:43; Mark 13:6; Jeremiah 14:14-15; Jeremiah 23:20-22; Acts 20:29; Acts 20:20.
  2. “I am Christ;” (ego emi ho Christos) “I am or exist as the Christ,” the Messiah, or the anointed one. Such are the anti-Christs, 1 John 2:18; 2 Thessalonians 2:3. They have come and are still coming as impostor-Messiahs, John 10:8; 1 John 2:18; 1 John 4:3; 2 John 1:7.

Matthew 24:6

  1. “And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars:” (mellesete de akpuein polemous kai akoas polemon) “Then you all (as a church) will be about to hear of wars and repeated rumors of war,” between races as then between Jews and Samaritans, repeated war reports or news, in continual rumbles, in an unsettled world that is preparing itself for acceptance of the antichrist, John 5:43; Revelation 6:1-8.2) “See that ye be not troubled:” (horate me throeithe) “You all (as a church) see that you are not disturbed,” frustrated, upset or unglued over the reports, Mark 13:7. Luke 21:9 read, you all “be not terrified.”
  2. “For all these things must come to pass,” (dei gar genesthai) “For it is necessary that these things come to be,” to exist, continually, Luke 21:9. All these things were preludes to the destruction of Jerusalem, the temple, and the scattering of Israel among all nations, till near the end of the Gentile age, Luke 21:24.
  3. “But the end is not yet.” (all’ oupo estin to telos) “But the end completion, or consummation is not yet,” but only approaches, Luke 21:9. Mr explains “shall not be yet,” or shall not have come to be (or exist yet). This simply means there is more ahead. More wars of repetition are not in themselves the sign of the Son of man’s coming, but reminds that He is yet to come, and the time draws nearer and nearer as the world cries out for a person who will bring peace out of pain, order of chaos, hope out of despair, Hebrews 10:36-37.

Matthew 24:7

  1. “For nation shall rise against nation,” (egerthesetai gar ethnos epi ethnos) “Because race will be raised up or (stirred up) against race,” or race clashes and conflicts shall exist continually, Mark 13:8; Luke 21:10.
  2. “And kingdom against kingdom:” (kai basileia epi basileian) “And kingdom (organized government) against kingdom or (organized government:” And as a result of race conflicts government clashes will come to be a regular thing.
  3. “And there shall be,” (kai esotai) “And there shall be or exist,” as a secondary or removed result of race clashes and government clashes or wars: a) “Famines” (limoi) “Famines,” a shortage of food, causing high starvation, over the earth, Revelation 6:5-6. b) “And pestilences,” (omitted from many older m.s.) yet clearly asserted by our Lord as recounted, Mark 13:8. c) “And earthquakes in divers places.” (kai sesmoi kata topous) “And earthquakes or seismographic disturbances coming down upon various topographical localities,” Luke 21:11.

Matthew 24:8

  1. “All these things are the beginning,” (panta de tauta arche) “Then (you may know that) all these kind of things are a beginning,” or originating signs, Mark 13:8.
  2. “Of sorrows.” (odinan) “Of recurring birth-pangs,” of continual or continually recurring sorrows, as described Revelation 6:1-8 as the anti-christ enters his era of accepted world rulership posing as the Messiah, switching hats and horses three times, eventually claiming to be God, John 5:43; Daniel 9:26-27; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12.

Matthew 24:9

  1. “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted,” (tote paradosousin humas eis thlipsin) “Then (at that time) they will deliver you all or betray you all into affliction,” as individual disciples, and as a church; The wicked religious and warmongering world order will have no place for you all; Such was our Lord’s forewarning to His church in the Sermon on the mount, Matthew 5:11-12; Matthew 10:17-18; Acts 4:2-3.
  2. “And shall kill you:” (kai apoktenousin humas) “And they will kill you,” murder you, with malice aforethought, Mark 13:9; John 16:2; Acts 7:59; Acts 12:1. Early Christians and the apostles faced such before the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple and the pre-tribulation the great era will witness this hate-spirit even more.
  3. “And ye shall be hated of all nations,” (kai esesthe misoumenoi hupo panton ton ethnon) “And you all will come to be hated by all races,” nations, heathen, or Gentiles, as well as by the Jews, who hated and killed our Lord, John 15:19; 1 Thessalonians 2:14-17; Luke 21:12. It was once a legal crime to be a Christian, Matthew 11:6; 1 Peter 4:16.
  4. “For my name’s sake.” (dia to onoma mou) “On account of my name,” that you confess and bear, 1 Peter 2:13; John 15:20-21.

Matthew 24:10

  1. “And then shall many be offended,” (kai tote skandaliat thesontai polloi) “And at that time many will be offended,” at doctrinal, moral, and ethical truth, and turn away, 2 Timothy 1:15; Matthew 11:6; Luke 7:23; John 16:1.
  2. “And shall betray one another,” (kai misesousin allelous) “And they will hate one another,” of their own people, Mark 13:12; Luke 21:16-17.

Matthew 24:11

  1. “And many false prophets shall rise,” (kai polloi pseuoprophetai egerthesontai) “And many false or lying prophets will be raised up,” 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; in sheep’s clothing, as angels of light, but merchandisers of the souls of men, Acts 20:29-30; 2 Peter 2:1-3.
  2. “And shall deceive many.” (kai planesousin pollous) “And they will cause many to err,” to go wrong in matters of morals and ethics and doctrine, 1 Timothy 4:1-2; 2 Peter 2:18-19.

Matthew 24:12

  1. “And because iniquity shall abound,” (kai dia to plethunthenai ten anomian) “And because the lawlessness (is) to be increased,” godlessness shall rule everywhere in those days, as in rebellious times in Israel when every man did that which was right in his own eyes,”
  2. “The love of many shall wax cold.” (psugesetai he agape ton pollon) “The true love or deep affections of the many (the masses) will grow (to be) cold,” will cool off; A sad feature of the degenerate, carnal times is that even God’s own let that mandated love, of His last and new commandment to them go unobeyed, John 13:34-35; Stir up the fires of brotherly love in your hearts and church, O people of God. Hebrews 13:1.

Matthew 24:13

  1. “But he that shall endure unto the end,” (ho de huporneinas eis telos) “Yet the one who perseveres into the consummation,” the end or completion, in obeying that new commandment of Joh 13:34-35; in avoiding being weary in well doing, Galatians 6:9; in faithfulness of service unto death, Revelation 2:10; 1 Corinthians 15:58.
  2. “The same shall be saved.” (houtos sothesetai) “This one or kind of one will be saved or delivered or liberated,” from the sorrows, hate, persecution and tribulation that is and is to come upon the earth, the races, and the kingdoms of rebel-men against God, during the era of The Tribulation The Great, at the coming of the Son of God in Glory, Hebrews 9:28; Luke 21:34-36; 1 Thessalonians 2:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Hebrews 10:36-37.

Matthew 24:14

  1. “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached,” (kai keruchthesetai touto to euangellion tes basileias) “And this gospel (or good report) of the kingdom will be heralded,” What kingdom? The answer is, “of the kingdom of heaven,” which Joh the Baptist preached. Jesus preached, and delivered to His church to preach, Matthew 16:18-19; John 15:16; John 15:27; John 20:21; Acts 1:8.
  2. “In all the world,” (en hole te oikoumene) “In all the inhabited earth,” as per His commission, mandate to His New Covenant company whom He chose, who companied with Him from the beginning of His ministry in Galilee, from the Baptism of Joh, John 15:27; Acts 1:21-22; Acts 10:37; Matthew 3:2; Matthew 4:17; Matthew 4:16-19.
  3. “For a witness unto all nations;” (eis marturion pasin tois ethnesin) “For a testimony to all the races,” Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-49; Acts 1:8; John 20:21.
  4. “And then shall the end come.” (kai tote heksei to telos) “And then (at that point) the end or consummation of all things will come.” This end consummation or completion of earth’s gospel message of repentance and remission of sins will be borne to all nations, Through the Gentile dispensation, and the church age, until the Millennial glory end, when Jesus effects the restitution of all things to the Father, Acts 3:19-21. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 reads, “Then cometh the end.”

Matthew 24:15

PRE-SAGE OF THE GREAT V. 15-26

  1. “When ye therefore shall see,” (hoton oun idete “When therefore you all see,” as disciples, as a church. It appears from this context that this prophetically alluded first, to the desecration and destruction of the temple under Tit, the second, to the coming interruption of the restored worship of the morning and evening oblations by the man of sin, Daniel 9:26-27.
  2. “The abomination of desolation,” (to bdelugma tes eremoseos to) “The abomination of the desolation,” which shall bring desolation, judgement upon the Jewish people and the world; While the Romans brought heathen worship to the temple area with the destruction of the holy place A.D. 70, worship of man, the anti-christ is to be at the door of The Tribulation The Great, 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12.
  3. “Spoken of by Daniel the prophet,” (hrethan dia Daniel tou prophetou) “That was expounded through Daniel the prophet,” Daniel 9:27; Daniel 11:31-32; Daniel 12:10-11.
  4. “Stand in the holy place,” (hestos en topo hagio) “Stand, stand up, or take a stand in the holy (sanctified) place,” of the temple and temple worship. Some believe this refers to a pre-New Testament temple desecration in the historical era of the Maccabees, when idol worship was introduced by Antiochus Epiphanes, but it appears certain that this refers to an end time event presaging, war in heaven, the casting down of Satan, the demand of self-worship by the man of sin when he ascends the temple of worship, Daniel 9:27; Revelation 12:7-10; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12.
  5. “(Whoso readeth let him understand:)” (ho anaginoskon noeito) “The one reading (whoever he be) let him understand or comprehend:” This holy place impostor, the little prince, the anti-christ, is the one with whom Israel enters the covenant for one week, who later demands self-worship, John 5:43; It is apparently at this point that he requires self-worship that The Tribulation The Great (last 42 months) of the covenant week begins, Daniel 12:10; Revelation 12:12; Revelation 12:14.

Matthew 24:16

  1. “Then let them which be in Judea,” (tote hoi en to loudaia) “At that time let them that be in Judea;” The church “ye” of Matthew 24:15 is to understand or comprehend what is occurring at the revelation of the man of sin, for the wise, and children of light, and chosen lightbearers shall understand, not be ignorant, Daniel 10:10-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5.
  2. “Flee into the mountains,” (pheugetosan eis ta ore) “Let them flee into the mountains;” The term “them” that be in Judea, at that time, when 42 months of the covenant time remain, are to flee from the beginning wrath, judgement fury, of the man of sin, who shall require death, starvation, etc, upon those who do not take his name or worship him, Revelation 13:4-9; It is about this time it appears that the war between Michael and Satan ends in heaven, with Satan cast out, with a time, times and half time left, that Jesus will come for His own, Revelation 12:7-10; Revelation 12:12; Revelation 12:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.

Matthew 24:17

  1. “Let him which is on the housetop,” (ho epi tou domatos) “The one who is upon the housetop,” the flat roofs resting, or sleeping, is charged.
  2. “Not come down,” (me katabato) “Let him not (dare) to come down,” into the house, to be trapped by arresting officers or executioners.
  3. “To take anything out of his house:” (arai ta ek tes oilias autou) “To take up his things out of his house or residence,” at all; let none try to save any of his earthly possessions in the path of the flood of anger and judgement wrath coming from that angry beast of the anti-christ.

Matthew 24:18

  1. “Neither let him which is in the field,” (kai ho en to agro) “And the one who is in the field,” Mark 13:16, at the plow making a livelihood. As the Roman army under Titus of Thespasia scattered, dispersed, murdered the Jews A.D. 70 in fulfillment of our Lord’s prophecy, so will the anti-christ attack them when they refuse to worship Him, 2 Thessalonians 2:4.
  2. “Return back to his clothes.” (me epistrepsato opiso aria to himation autou) “Let him not return (or turn back) go back to his residence to take his garments,” or his wardrobe, or any worldly possession, 1 John 2:15-17; Mark 13:15-16; Luke 21:20-21.

Matthew 24:19

  1. “And woe unto them that are with child,” (ouai de tais en gastri echousais) “Woe then (shall be) to the woman with child,” to or upon the pregnant woman, Mark 13:17; There shall be much running, weeping, and wanting to die, at that time, Revelation 6:15-17.
  2. “And to them that give suck in those days!” (kai tais thelazousais en ekeinais tais hemenais) “And to those who are giving suck (nursing their suckling) in those days!” Mark 13:17; Men and women and young people who refuse to worship the person of the anti-christ, man of sin, or beast, shall be in mortal danger of death, while fleeing from death on every hand, Amos 8:11-13; Revelation 6:17; Luke 21:22-23. The “this people” of Matthew 24:23; Daniel 9:26-27, refer to God’s final judgment upon a Christ rejecting world, with rebellious Israel as the central causative people on whom His wrath is poured out.

Matthew 24:20

  1. “But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter,” (proseuchesthe de hina me genetai he phuge humon cheimonos) “And pray ye earnestly in order that your flight not occur in the winter, Mark 13:18, in unseasonably cold weather, when the Roman hordes sweep down on Israel and Jerusalem, a preview of the antichrist and beast warriors who come at the end time.
  2. “Neither on the sabbath day:” (mede sabbaton) “Nor on a sabbath at all,” to those who then shall have set up the sabbath form era of Jewish worship again, Daniel 9:26-27.

Matthew 24:21

  1. “For then shall be great tribulation,” (estai gar tote thlipsis megale) “Because there will then be, come to be, to exist, great affliction.” Revelation 7:13-14 describes those raptured of the church (and righteous ones) before the throne, who were raised out from the dead, awaiting the final tribulation wrath of God to be poured out for yet 42 months, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.
  2. “Such as was not since the beginning of the world,” (hoia ou gegonen ap’ arches kosnou) “Such as has not occurred from the beginning of the present world, or cosmic order,” under any despot or despotic government, from the beginning of time, Mark 13:19; Luke 21:25-28.
  3. “To this time,” (heos tou nun) “Until now,” and forevermore hereafter. This tribulation era when Satan and his accusers are cast out of heaven and the antichrist requires worship as God, for a coming period of 42 months, Revelation 12:7-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12; Revelation 13:4-8.
  4. “No, nor ever shall be.” (oud ou me genetai) “No nor by any means, may such ever come to be or exist,” at any time other than this designated time which is a signal-sign of the coming of Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.

Matthew 24:22

  1. “And except those days be shortened,” (kai ei me ekolobothesan hai hemeria ekeinai) “And unless those days were cut short,” caused to be shortened in number or duration. Except God should intervene to stop the devastation wrought by Satan, who knows that he has (had) “but a little time,” after being cast down from heaven, Revelation 12:7-12; Revelation 13:14.
  2. “There should no flesh be saved:” (ouk an esothe pasa sarks) “No flesh (at all) would be saved,” Mark 13:20; But the days are shortened, abbreviated, or cut off by the coming of Jesus Christ, to end Armageddon and the 42 month period of the Tribulation The Great, Revelation 19:11-21. This follows the rewarding of the saints and the marriage of the Lamb, Revelation 19:7-10.
  3. “But for the elect’s sake,” (dia de tous eklektous) “Yet on account of the chosen ones;” Two covenant groups and two only are referred to as “The elect,” in the Scriptures: First, Israel, as custodian of the law, with whom God deals in the seventieth week of Daniel’s prophecy, referred to here as “The elect,” and second, the church of Jesus Christ is often referred to as His elect (chosen) in this age, John 1:16; 2 John 1:1; 2 John 1:13; 1 Peter 1:1-2.
  4. “Those days shall be shortened.” (kolobothesontai hai hemerai ekeinai) “Those days will be cut short,” with the coming of Jesus “with His saints,” to the earth, in power and great glory, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Daniel 12:10-12; Mark 13:20. Election of God is not a prefixation of salvation for a few, while excluding others. It always conveys the idea of the call and predestination of all believers to eternal life, and all elect believers (those of Israel’s covenant heirsetting people) or the church’s heirsetting people, to special positions of continuing honor and service to God Through the Millennial and into the New Heaven ages, Ephesians 3:21; Revelation 21:9-14.

Matthew 24:23

  1. “Then if any man shall say unto you,” (tote ean tis humin eipe) “At that point of time if anyone should say or says to you,” to you all, my disciples, my covenant church fellowship, Matthew 24:1; Matthew 24:3. Let these tale-bearing, rabble-rousing, Tornado-Tom prophets of Satan pass on, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15.
  2. “Lo, here is Christ;” (idou hode ho Christos) “Just look, stop and consider here (is) the Christ,” the Messiah, Mark 13:21; Such is a base deceiver, a false prophet, an impostor, an antichrist, Mark 13:22-23.
  3. “Or there; believe it not.” (e hode me pisteusete) “Or, here (this one) believe it or trust it or him not,” for he is not telling the truth, Mark 13:21; Matthew 7:22-23.

Matthew 24:24

  1. “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets,” (egerthesontai gar pseudochristoi kai psudoprophetai) “Because there will be raised up (elevated, or exalted) false Christs (messiahs) Matthew 7:22-23, and there will be raised up, elevated, or exalted by men false prophets.”
  2. “And shall shew great signs and wonders;” (kai dosousin semeia megala kai terata) “And they will give or dole out great signs and, marvels,” fake miracles, even performing miracles by the power of the devil, by demon powers, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; Revelation 16:13-14.
  3. “Insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive,” (hoste planesai ei dunaton) “So as to cause to err, if possible,” or lead away and deceive, 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10.
  4. “The very elect.” (kai tous eklektaus) “Even the chosen ones of Christ,” the church disciples, you all in particular, Matthew 24:1; Matthew 24:3; as in Matthew 5:1-3; Matthew 5:13-15; Matthew 16:18-19, etc. The church is here referred to as The elect, as in 1 Peter 1:1-2; 2 John 1:1; 2 John 1:13.

Matthew 24:25

  1. “Behold,” (idou) “Give special attention or consideration to this,” to what I have told you, and am about to explain further, regarding signs of end times and the “sign” of the coming of the Son of man, which is the claim of the antichrist, that he is God, which sets off: 1) The casting of Satan out of heaven, 2) And the descent of Christ for His own, those in their graves and the children of light, the wise who live and who look for Him, Daniel 12:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5; Hebrews 9:27-28; 1 Thessalonians 2:12; 1 Thessalonians 2:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.
  2. “I have told you before.” (proeireka humin) “I have previously confided this to you all,” as a church, a chosen people, from the beginning, John 15:16; John 15:7; He never held out glory without suffering, or rewards without works, or a crowning without a crucifixion, Matthew 5:10-12; John 15:19-22; John 13:19; John 14:29; Galatians 6:14.

Matthew 24:26

  1. “Wherefore if they shall say unto you,” (ean oun eiposin humin) “If they (messengers of false Christs) shall report to you all,” as they will be forewarned, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; They parade as angels of light, ministers of righteousness, but shall have our Lord’s “Depart,” spoken to them in judgement, Matthew 7:22-23.
  2. “ Behold, he is in the desert;” (idou en te eremo estin) “Behold or take notice he (the Christ) is in the desert,” has to go out there to take care of the crowds, keep down traffic jams.
  3. “Go not forth:” (me ekselthete) “You all do not go out there,” as servants of the old Deceiver, the Devil, Mark 13:21-23.
  4. “Behold, he is in the secret chambers;” (ldou en tois tamieious) “Or pay attention, get this secret, he is in private rooms, chambers, or apartments,” making known his mysteries to just a few, as so called Jehovah witnesses and Mormons often claim.
  5. “Believe it not.” (me pisteusete) “Do not believe it,” or be deceived by it, for such is the - loose talk of enemies of Christ and truth. Do not give credence to anything these pandering peddlers of false prophecy preach, 2 Peter 2:1-4.

  2. “And shineth even unto the west;” (kai phanetai heos dunsman) “And it shines (is seen) unto the west;” where “the sun goes down;” This speaks of the suddenness and unexpectedness of the event, when the masses of men are not watching, Luke 17:26-27.

  2. “There will the eagles be gathered together.” (ekei sunachthesontai hoi aetoi) “Out there the eagles will be assembled, gathered, congregated, or flocked together.” This refers not just to the eagle signet of the Roman army, but more specifically to the literal carrion fowls (buzzards) that shall be gathered to consume the dead bodies of the slain in the valley of Megiddo at the end of the battle of Armageddon, Zechariah 12:11; Revelation 19:17-18; Revelation 19:21.

  2. “Shall the sun be darkened,” (ho hellos skotisthesetai) “The sun will be darkened,” Joe 2:31, lose its light, for the “Son of righteousness,” Malachi 4:2, has come to put down and bind Satan for a thousand years, Revelation 20:2-3; Revelation 20:7. The sun will be darkened finally, as at the death of Christ.
  3. “And the moon shall not give her light,” (kai he selene ou dosei to phengos autes) “And the moon will not give (out) her light,” Mark 13:24; as also prophesied by Joe 2:10; Joe 3:15.

He shall come in clouds, with trumpet sound, Revelation 1:7; Acts 1:9-11.
  3. “And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn,” (kai tote kopsontai pasai kai phulai tes ges) “And then (at that time) all the tribes of the land or earth will bewail,” 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10.

Matthew 24:31

Matthew 24:32

FIG TREE PARABLE AND END-TIME V. 32-51

  1. “Now learn a parable of a fig tree,” (apo de tes sukes mathete ten parabolen) “Now you all learn a parable from the fig-tree,” as also recounted by Luke 21:29. It has something to say regarding the coming of Jesus Christ, to those who will to learn, as the ant has lesson for the sluggard, Proverbs 6:6; Proverbs 30:25; and other creatures of nature, Job 12:7-8.
  2. “When his branch is yet tender,” (hoton ede ho klados autes genetai hapalos) “When (the moment) its branch becomes tender,” in the bud.
  3. “And putteth forth leaves,” (kai ta phulla ekpheu) “And it puts forth the leaves,” as it is among the last of trees to put forth buds and leaves in the springtime, before summer arrives, Luke 21:30.
  4. “Ye know that summer is nigh:” (ginoskete hoti engus to theros) “You all know that summer is near.” It would be strange if the fig budded, then gave leaves, but summer never came. But you know that according to God’s pledged honor such does not occur; Neither will all these signs of the coming, of Jesus’ coming, occur without His coming very soon , see? Genesis 8:22; Hebrews 10:36-37.

Matthew 24:33

  1. “So likewise ye,” (houtos kai humeis) “Just like this, or in a similar manner you all,” you disciples who have inquired of these matters privately, as a church, Matthew 24:1; Matthew 24:3.
  2. “When ye shall see all these things,” (hotan idete panta tauta) “When you perceive all these things,” as children of light, as my New Covenant church, Matthew 5:15-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6; Daniel 12:10.
  3. “Know that it is near, even at the doors.” (ginoskete hoti engus epi thurais) “Know ye that it is at the door,” Luke 21:31; or near entering, at hand, even as the “Kingdom of heaven” was at hand, at the preaching of Joh the Baptist, Matthew 3:2.

Matthew 24:34

  1. “Verily I say unto you,” (amen lego humin) “Truly I advise you all,” confide in and to you all, the church, the New Covenant fellowship that was to become custodian of His work and worship very soon, John 20:21.
  2. “This generation shall not pass,” (hot! ou me parelthe he genea autes) “That this generation by no means passes or will pass,” Matthew 13:30. The “this generation” (Gk. genea) evidently refers to the Jewish race, to whom He had come and who had rejected Him, John 1:11-12; Matthew 23:37-39.
  3. “Till all these things be fulfilled.” (heos an panta tauta genetai) “Until all these things occur, happen, or come to be.” This is a specific certification that the Jewish race (natural Israel), though scattered Through all nations and persecuted Through The Tribulation The Great, should still survive till all these judgment matters be fulfilled, Luke 21:24.

Matthew 24:35

  1. “Heaven and earth shall pass away,” (ho ouranos kai he ge pareleusetai) “The heaven and the earth will pass away,” Hebrews 1:10-12, though they have long endured, Isaiah 51:6. This appears to occur with the casting out of Satan, falling of the stars, and darkening of the sun and moon, Matthew 24:29-30 : Revelation 12:7-14.
  2. “But my words shall not pass away.” (hoi de logoi mou ou me parelthosin) “Yet my words will by no means pass away,” Mark 13:31. See also Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 40:8; Luke 21:33.

Matthew 24:36

  1. “But of that day and hour,” (peri de tes hemeras ekeines kai horas) “Then concerning that day and hour,” of time in a definitive way; of the coming of Jesus to put an end to The Tribulation The Great, and to begin His reign on earth, Mark 13:32.
  2. “Knoweth no man,” (oudeis oiden) “Not one knows,” perceives or has fixed knowledge, Matthew 24:42; Matthew 24:44; Mark 13:34-35. Though one may know and understand, when these things come, that it is near.
  3. “No, not the angels of heaven,” (oude hoi angelloi ton ouranon) “Not even the angels of the heavens,” (oude ho huios) “Nor the Son of God,” Mark 13:32. If any should know Jesus and His angel servants would surely know first, see?
  4. “But my Father only.” (ei me ho pater monos) “Except the Father only,” Mark 13:32; The “times and seasons” of the set up and administration of our Lord over Israel, when He sits on David’s throne, are not yet revealed by the Father, though the fact and certainty is disclosed, Luke 1:32-33; Luke 22:28-30; Acts 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 5:1.

Matthew 24:37

  1. “But as the days of Noe were,” (hooper gar hai hemerai tou Noe) “For as the days of Noah were,” or as it existed and occurred in Noah’s day. This is an historical attestation of the person of Noah and fact of the calamity of the flood in his day, as recounted Genesis 6:8-22; Genesis 7:1 to Genesis 9:29.
  2. “So shall also the coming,” (houtos estai he parousia) “So will be or exist (the times and conditions) at the bodily appearance,” or personal coming, sudden and unexpected at the last, or end of the tribulation, though not without forewarning, Mark 13:34-36.
  3. “Of the Son of man be.” (tou huiou tou anthropou) “Of the heir of the human race,” Luke 22:34-36.

Matthew 24:38

  1. “For as in the days that were before the flood,” (hos gar esan en tais hemerais ekeinas tais pro tou kataklusmou) “Because as they (the people were) in the days prior to the flood,” Genesis 6:5-8. The Noahic flood illustration is designed to show the certainty of God’s words and warnings.
  2. “They were eating and drinking,” (trogontes kai pinontes) “Continually eating and drinking,” pursuing or going on their ordinary way of life, in carnal pursuit of sin and worldliness, paying no attention to the warnings of God that Noah was preaching, 1 Peter 3:19-20.
  3. “Marrying and giving in marriage,” (gamountes kai gamizontes) “Continually marrying and being given in marriage;” And nothing was wrong with either “per se”. But to ignore God’s warning of judgement, going on their worldly ways, ignoring God’s call Through Noah was wrong, Proverbs 29:1; Romans 2:4-5.
  4. “Until the day that Noe entered into the ark.” (archi hes hemeras eiselthen Noe eis ten kiboton) “Until the day on which Noah entered into the ark.” They went blindly on to death, willfully, obstinately disregarding the call of God Through Noah, refusing to prepare to enter the ark, a place of perfect safety from the pending judgment, Genesis 7:1-2; Genesis 7:13; Genesis 7:16; Genesis 7:21.

Matthew 24:39

  1. “And knew not until the flood came,” (kai ouk egnosan heos elthen ho kataklusmos) “And they knew not (did not understand, or were not concerned) until the flood came,” like a cataclysm upon them. They ignored or procrastinated until their day of safety was gone forever, Hebrews 9:27; Proverbs 29:1; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.
  2. “And took them all away,” (kai eren hapantas) “And it took them all away,” to and in death, except Noah and his family of eight who had believed and acted upon God’s warning call, 1 Peter 3:19-20.
  3. “So shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (houtos estai kai he parousia tou huiou tou anthropou) “Like this will also the bodily appearance of the Son of man be.” Those who ignore, scoff at, or procrastinate preparation for the end of the world and judgement of God for their sins will one day cry, too late, Proverbs 1:22-31; Jeremiah 11:14.

Matthew 24:40

  1. “Then shall two be in the field,” (tote esontai duo en to agro) “There will then be two in the field,” at their daily labor for livelihood.
  2. “The one shall be taken,” (eis paralambanetai) “One of the two will be taken away;” The one who was “looking for His coming,” and “watching,” that he might “be accounted worthy to escape,” the wrath that begins at His coming in the air, Hebrews 9:28; Luke 22:34; Luke 22:36.
  3. “And the other left.” (kai eis aphietai) “And the other left behind.” The ‘one who ignores or procrastinates or despises, takes lightly the calls and warnings of the Lord, Romans 2:4-5; Proverbs 29:1.

Matthew 24:41

  1. “Two women shall be grinding at the mill,” (duo alethousai en to mulo) “Two (women) will be grinding in or at the mill,” grinding flour or meal. The ancient circular millstone, some two feet in diameter, was turned by two women, considered women’s work.
  2. “The one shall be taken,” (mia paralambanetai) “One is (to be) taken away,” at the coming of the Lord in the air for His saints, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.
  3. “And the other left.” (kai mia aphietai) “And one (the other) will be left behind,” cut asunder for a different destiny, at least so far as the then coming Tribulation the Great is concerned, Luke 22:34-36.

Matthew 24:42

  1. “Watch therefore,” (gregoreite oun) “You all watch therefore,” or be alert, watchful therefore, in the light of this coming event, when Jesus first comes in the air, not to the earth, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Mark 13:34-37; Luke 12:39-40; 1 Peter 4:7.
  2. “For ye know not,” (hoti ouk oidate) “Because you do not perceive,” though the signs of His coming will be recognized, anticipated by the wise, the children of light, the watching church “ye” 1 Thessalonians 2:12-14; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6; Daniel 12:10, they do not know the definite day or hour.
  3. “What hour your Lord doth come.” (poia hemera ho kurios humon erchetai) “On what day your Lord-Superior is coming,” to require an accounting of His servants and stewards, His church that shall still be laboring or here to labor especially, till He comes at the time concealed, to the glory of the Father, Proverbs 25:2; Mark 13:34-35.

Matthew 24:43

1),“But know this,” (ekeino de ginoskete) “Then you all really observe, know this,” or are aware of this principle, that is set forth on watchfulness, as follows: 2) “That if the goodman of the house had known,” (hoti ei edei ho oikodespotes) “That if the housemaster knew,” or was aware; Not knowing the day or hour, yet knowing he comes, induces alertness of mind and life to readiness. For yet a little while and He comes, Hebrews 10:36-37. 3) “In what watch the thief would come,” (poia phulake ho kleptes erchetai) “In what hour (the specific hour that) the thief is coming,” or was to appear, Psalms 90:4; Revelation 22:12. 4) “He would have watched,” (eregoresen an) “He would have watched,” stood guard, Through all the watch, would have stayed alert at his sentry duty, Matthew 26:41. 5) “And would not have suffered his house to be broken up.” (kai ouk an eiasen dioruchthenai ten oikian autou) “And he would not have permitted his house or residence to be dug through,” for purposes of “thievery,” by his negligence. Even the housemaster of an humble clay residence would not be dilatory, if he had been told and believed a thief was about to come his way.

Matthew 24:44

  1. “Therefore be ye also ready:” (dia touto kai humeis ginesthe etoimoi) “Therefore you all also be ready,” you, even you all of my New Covenant fellowship of disciples, whom He addressed privately and restrictedly in, 1) First, the Sermon on the mount, Matthew 5:1-3; and second, on second coming events here, Matthew 24:1 to Matthew 25:46.
  2. “For in such an hour as ye think not,” (hot! he ou dokeite hora) “Because in an hour when you are not anticipating it,” even you of the church. It is of grave necessity that all children of the Lord be looking for His coming, watching, “that they may be accounted or adjudged worthy,” to escape the tribulation judgments that shall fall on both the unbelievers and those who look not or watch not for His coming, Luke 22:34-36; Hebrews 9:28.
  3. “The Son of man cometh.” (ho huios tou anthropou erchetai) “The heir of mankind comes;” Matthew 25:10 indicates that those prepared, those looking for Him went in to the marriage supper, and the door was shut, Luke 12:35-40; Luke 12:43.

Matthew 24:45

  1. “Who then is a faithful and wise servant,” (tis ara estin ho pistos doulos kai phronimos) “Who then is or exists as the faithful and prudent servant,” or will be that kind of a wise and prudent servant.
  2. “Whom his lord hath made ruler over his household,” (hon katestesen ho kurios epi tes oiketeias auton) “Whom the Lord Superior appointed over his household affairs,” over His church, to whom He delivered the “keys,” administrative work of “the kingdom of heaven” in this age, Matthew 16:19; Mark 13:34-35; 1 Timothy 3:15-16.
  3. “To give them meat in due season?” (tou dounai autois ten trophen en kairo) “To dole out to them their food in season?” The church is not only to make and baptize disciples, but also to feed them the Word, the “all things” commanded of our Lord, Matthew 28:18-20.

Matthew 24:46

  1. “Blessed is (the state or condition of) that servant,” any servant or every servant of the Lord Superior, of His household, His church, which is a better house than that Moses built, Hebrews 3:1-6; 1 Timothy 3:15; Mark 13:34-35.
  2. “Whom his lord when he cometh,” (hon elthon ho kurios autou) “Whom upon the coming of the Lord Superior,” and He will come, 1 Corinthians 4:2.
  3. “Shall find so doing.” (heuresei houtos poiounta) “He will find (his servant) thus doing.” He will find him watchful as a sentinel, a guard, a protector, and provider over his household, Matthew 25:10.

Matthew 24:47

  1. “Verily I say unto you,” (amen lego humin) “I tell you all truly,” certainly, truly, as a matter of fact.
  2. “That he shall make him ruler over all his goods,” (hot! epi pasin tois huparchousin autou katastesei auton) “That he will appoint him over all his goods,” to stand up and rule over all that he has." The Lord Superior will, at His coming, appoint that kind of watchful servant over all that He has, in the millennial era, as He reigns from David’s throne. Not only has He pre-pledged positions of rulership for the twelve apostles on the twelve thrones of Israel, but also promised positions of similar rulership to faithful church members, Matthew 25:14-23; Luke 19:18-19.

Matthew 24:48

  1. “But and if that evil servant,” (ean de eipe ho kakos doulos ekeinos) “Yet if that morally and ethically bad behaving servant,” of the same master, who has put him in a position of trust, as one of his own servants.
  2. “Shall say in his heart,” (en te kardia autou) “In and from his heart,” (Gk. eipe) “if he should say,” presuming to be more wise than his master, 1 Corinthians 1:25-26; 1 Corinthians 3:18-19.
  3. “My lord delayeth his coming.” (chronizei mou ho kurios) “Should say my Lord Superior delays,” is not about to come, for an accounting anytime soon; Doubting, skeptical of his master’s return when his master told him he would; I can get by in trifling, using what belongs to him, for a time yet, Hebrews 10:37; 2 Peter 3:4; 2 Peter 3:9; Revelation 22:7; Revelation 22:12; Revelation 22:20.

Matthew 24:49

  1. “And shall begin to smite his fellow servants,” (kai arksetai tuptein tous sundoulos autou) “And if he begins to fraternize (back-slaps) his fellow-servants,” in a lecherous, lustful, carnal manner, as people did in Noah’s day, the forewarned, Matthew 24:37-39.
  2. “And to eat and drink with the drunken;” (esthie de kai pine meta ten methuonton) “Then he begins (to eat) eats and drinks with those who are drunk,” in a worldly manner, unbecoming to the household of the LordSuperior, and especially those of His church, is in conflict with what becomes a follower of Jesus and a member of His church, Romans 12:1-2.

Matthew 24:50

  1. “The lord of that servant shall come,” (eksei ho kurios tou doulou ekeinou) “The lord of that slave will come,” as Lord-Superior, to require an accounting of His servant whom He left in custody of His household, Matthew 24:45.
  2. “In a day when he looketh not for him,” (en hemera he ou prosdoka) “On a day which he does not expect,” is not expecting or anticipating in his drunken, carnal, bacchanalian conduct, saying, My lord delayeth his coming," Matthew 24:47, as scoffers also shall do, asking cynically, “where is the promise (fulfilled promise) of his coming?” 2 Peter 3:3-4.
  3. “And in an hour that he is not aware of,” (kai en hora he ou ginoskei) “And in an hour which he does not know,” because of willing ignorance of clear warnings, Luke 21:35; Matthew 24:39; Matthew 24:42-44; Luke 12:46.

Matthew 24:51

  1. “And shall cut him asunder,” (kai dichotoumesei auton) “And he will cut him asunder,” separate him from that administrative trust He had assigned or appointed to him," for a time of tribulation in which he is left, Luke 12:46; perhaps to be beheaded when exposed to the beast, Revelation 13:4-8; Revelation 13:15-17; Revelation 20:4.
  2. “And appoint him his portion with the hypocrites:” (kai meros autou meta ton hupokriton thesei) “And he will place the portion of him with the hypocrites,” will assign or appoint to him a place and measured out time of suffering with the hypocrites of Judaism and Christiandom in the following 42 months of the Tribulation The Great, Daniel 9:27.
  3. “There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (ekei estai ho klauthmos kai ho brugmos ton odonton) “Out there will be or exist (the measured portion for each) in the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, for a period of unparalleled earthly sorrow and suffering, endured by the Messiah-rejecting Jews, the mystery Babylon the Great (Catholicism) and her daughters (of protestantism), and the unwatching, unfaithful, worldly living custodians of the Lord Superior’s household, even of the church of Jesus Christ. it appears that this is a severe warning our Lord conveyed not to or about the sum total of the saved or the unsaved only, but to members of His own church, house, or agency of worship, whom He charged “watch ye” and “be ye ready,” Matthew 24:42; Matthew 24:45.
