The noble souls have always known the necessity that nature has laid upon them, in all ages, to develop their souls by self culture and self sacrifice. If study, in which men have meditated

upon the problems of their own life, has set men fighting their own personal battles, wrestling with their own personal sins, self-sacrifice also has set up its altars in the world. It has taught men, in the darkest ages, to live not only for themselves, but for others. It has taught men to know that the noblest thing men could do with human life was to give that human life away. If self-culture has built the schools, self-sacrifice has built the altars, has sent men to their martyrdom, has made men ingenious and gracious, as they have struggled with the problems of their own existence. It is impossible for us not to recognize both of these as the two great missions, the two great intuitions, the two great fields of duty, which God has offered to every man.
