Daily Thoughts from Phillips Brooks

Shall I sit down in my study and say, “I am to make myself the very best man, the fullest man that I possibly can, in order that I may do some work with myself by and by?” On the other hand, shall I go out to my dealings with the world, and serve my fellow-men, in order that I may serve myself?”

We must come back to our Lord again, and everything becomes clear in that very clearest life

which is our perpetual inspiration and study. Christ was cultivating Jesus of Nazareth, and yet was remembering the fellow-men who were around him in Jerusalem and Galilee. But all this was subject to and governed by His entire consecration to His God.
