ἐκ, before a vowel ἐξ, a preposition governing the genitive. It denotes as well exit or emission out of, as separation from, something with which there has been close connection ; opp. to the prepositions εἰς into and ἐν in: from out of, out from, forth from, from, (Lat. e, ex), [ οἵ. A certain zrstrumental force underlies the use of ἐκ in such a passage as P Oxy III. 48678 (a.p. 131) ἐγὼ δὲ ἔκτοτε ἐκ τῆς τοῦ ἐπιστρατήγου ἐπιστολῆς]. . ἐνθάδε κατήντησα, “ΕῚ thereupon in consequence of the letter of the epistrategus presented myself here,” and 10.353 τὰ ἐμὰ πάν[τα] ἐκ τῆς ὑπερβαροῦς ἀνα[βάσἼεως τοῦ ἱερωτάτου Νίλου ἀπολωλέναι, “that all my property has been lost through the excessive rise of the most sacred Nile” (Edd.).
