1 Samuel 15:28 Summary
[This verse is saying that God is taking away Saul's right to be king because he didn't obey God's commands, as seen in 1 Samuel 15:23. God is giving the kingdom to someone else who is more faithful and obedient, just like how a parent might take away a privilege from a child who doesn't follow the rules. This shows that God is sovereign and can change His plans if we don't follow His will, as seen in Jeremiah 18:10. We can learn from Saul's mistake by being more careful to obey God's commands and follow His will, as seen in John 14:15.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for the LORD to 'tear' the kingdom from Saul?
This phrase means that God is taking away Saul's right to rule over Israel, just like a garment is torn apart, as seen in the physical tearing of Samuel's robe in 1 Samuel 15:27, and giving it to someone else who is more worthy, as stated in 1 Samuel 15:28.
Who is the 'neighbor' that the kingdom is given to?
The 'neighbor' refers to David, who was chosen by God to be the next king of Israel, as seen in 1 Samuel 16:13, and is considered better than Saul because of his faithfulness and obedience to God, as seen in Acts 13:22.
Is this verse saying that God makes mistakes in His choices?
No, this verse is not saying that God makes mistakes, but rather that He is sovereign and can change His plans if the person He has chosen does not follow His will, as seen in 1 Samuel 15:29, and as also stated in Numbers 23:19, God does not lie or change His mind.
What is the significance of the LORD giving the kingdom to someone 'better' than Saul?
The significance is that God is looking for people who are faithful and obedient to Him, and He will give them the opportunities and responsibilities that He has taken away from those who are disobedient, as seen in Luke 12:48 and 1 Corinthians 4:2.
